Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

This place is a Mess....

You cant even go on vacation knowing that when you get back youd at least be able to get caught up on emails and the like before being bombarded with Teams calls and new emails asking for even more things.

Its not even a vacation when youre dreading coming back to the nonsense
and high anxiety

Me big strong alpha. Me wake up, grunt at sun, drink black coffee with extra testosterone. Me no need remote work, me thrive in cubicle jungle. Weaklings cry about RTO, but me? Me crush commute like mammoth skull under mighty club.

Me see puny desk jockeys whine about “work-life balance.” Me laugh. Work IS life. Me pound keyboard like ancient war drum. Me show dominance in mandatory meetings. Me say, “Synergy,” and lesser men tremble.

Me call names, belittle others, and scratch mighty ball---k - this is true leadership. Me no need logic. Me need only loud voice and strong opinions. Boogala boogala.

"You could:

Put Teams on DND for the morning of your return from vacation, so you can catch up
Block off your calendar for the same time period, so people know not to send you mtg. invites for calls until at least after noon of that day
Don't respond to texts until after lunch on your first day back"

Don't know about everyone else but doing any of these things would summon my manager to my desk faster than the millennium falcon.

Hard to do any work with vast amounts of staff laid off. Support teams gone, colleagues who could back you up are
gone, so much knowledge gone. No one knows who to go to for assistance anymore because most were laid off.

@ad

Clearly, you and OP can't hack it in the real business world, if you get anxious trying to tackle even the most mundane of run-of-the-mill tasks, and get flummoxed with basic time management.

You have no idea what real busy even looks like.
The slightest little acceleration in pace has you careening off the cliff.
Your lack of fortitude is so ridiculous and weak.

Maybe you two should both quit your "high anxiety" desk-jockey jobs at Dell, and start your own dog-walking service.
Soft'nCuddlies!!
Warm'nfuzzies!!
You could even take your own emotional support animals to work every day!
Seems about more your speed.

You're the one who seems to be a mess.

Figure it out.
You are acting as if you are a child with no agency, when in r.e.a.l.i.t.y, you are an adult with full autonomy!

THINK, instead of allowing yourself to get overwhelmed.
LOOK AHEAD, and plan accordingly, instead of being "surprised" when normal things happen.

You could:

  • Put Teams on DND for the morning of your return from vacation, so you can catch up
  • Block off your calendar for the same time period, so people know not to send you mtg. invites for calls until at least after noon of that day
  • Don't respond to texts until after lunch on your first day back
  • If someone physically stops by your desk to make requests, ask them if it's a dire emergency. If they say anything but yes, tell them to email you their request, and that you'll get to it as soon as bandwidth allows, since you're catching up from being on vacay.

People will treat (or mistreat) you with whatever you allow.
Don't allow yourself to be overwhelmed and bullied or rushed, just because someone else wants things yesterday, and you were on vacation then.
Unless something is a genuinely dire emergency, their request can wait (but be responsible and professional about getting back to them, and working out a reasonable timeline/deadline for deliverables.)

Most people understand that there is a certain amount of catch-up time a person needs, when they're returning from vacation. It's up to you to communicate your situation, and up to them to be humane with accommodating that.

Of course if it REALLY stresses you out SO MUCH, where you're using the tired and over-used word of, "anxiety" to describe your state of mind, then do yourself a favor and next time you're OOO, give yourself an UNPAID half (or full?) day to log on to your work stuff and get caught up that way, before officially being back to work.

Don't like that option?
Then su-k it up and deal.
Everyone else does.

During your absence set up a rule to delete all new email.
Upon returning, suspend that rule. If you don’t get a second request when you’re back, it couldn’t have been very important.
