Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Non-Compete and Severance Clauses

For those that are impacted by the reduction in force, please check or have someone go over the severance agreement to see if there's a timeframe set for a non-compete clause. This would include verbiage regarding a timeframe of which you may be illegible for employment by a similar company offering a similar or slightly different role. While some states do have limitations on this, please exercise due diligence.

Example: You may be barred from working in a telecom or similar company for a period of six months before they would consider hiring you. You would go through the whole interview process, but then get hung up during the final selection due to this.

@OP Most non competes provisions are part of executive level contracts signed on the front end of employment so those who are subject to them are higher up in the company and are aware of what they signed when they joined. The rest of us shouldn't be subject to any limitations after we leave the company and our separation paperwork shouldn't contain any non-compete language.

Non competes are pretty unenforceable after you’ve been laid off anyway. Mostly meant for C-level executives.

Verizon cannot restrict you from seeking employment with a similar / competing company if they RIF you. The clause typically identifies a period of time (typically 6 months) you must wait before possibly being rehired by Verizon or working as a contractor on Verizon projects. Just read it carefully so you don’t waste time seeking employment before understanding the language in the agreement.

If you are impacted, you can look for work in Vz while still on payroll but will have to wait to apply for Vz work for a period of time after being off-boarded.

Good luck.

@a2 or just fu--ing read it like an adult human with a functioning brain. If you can't read and interpret a document you're signing without asking a predictive text machine you absolutely deserve to be out of a job

To answer how they would know: during prior employment verification at your new job during onboarding, or if they are a Verizon vendor requiring access to VZ systems, when they attempt to get you credentials
