Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Not sure what to do

Would you leave your current job for almost 25 percent less pay if it meant better benefits and, from what I can tell, significantly higher job security? Normally I wouldn’t even think about it, but I’ve been looking for nearly six months, and this is the only offer that seems even halfway decent. Given the current state of Intel and what’s on the horizon, I’m honestly torn.

Is the new job better aligned with your passion? If so, I suggest you take it. Since it is something you are passionate about, in less than 5 years, you will be making much more so the 25% shortage will be irrelevant in a short time.

@ba... A lot of companies are laying off. Go read the Microsoft layoff site, they have over 225K employees are they are trimming down fast. The trade negotiations aren't going very well so the tariffs that were put on hold for 90 days will likely come back to their original levels and the markets could tank again. This will all happen in the next month. Companies are not taking the risk of bringing a lot of new people onboard with all of the uncertainty.

Package is apparently 4 weeks, plus 9 weeks in lieu of redeployment and 1.5 weeks per year of service. Same as last year. Source: A friend laid off in DCAI in AZ.

The job market is going to get a lot more competitive after the layoffs. But the severance package is hard to ignore.
Intel has only announced cuts, there is no plan for a tech forward comeback.
I took VSP last September, job market is brutal competition and it's everyone who left Intel with me.

@OP In a heartbeat. You can't put a high enough price on your mental health, and getting out from under the boulder we're under at Intel is easily worth the 25%.

@ab they didn't say that they had been at Intel for 25 years. There is also a high probability that the "package" will be the 60 days required by WARN and no more.

I wouldn’t. Let them lay you off and collect the severance package + unemployment for a bit. If you’ve been here for 25 years that package will be maxed out.

Wages being offered are going down. It is an employers job market. Staying at Intel could leave you with 100% less income than you are currently getting.

Can you live on 25% less pay? If so, I would take it. You can still keep looking after start your new job.

Intel knows how much you make and if they can find someone who can do your job for less you will be out the door.

Time is money. If you work closer to 40/wk vs the 60/wk at Intel, then it’s more equitable. Certainly less stress. Cut fluff out of your budget… buckle down… and get out of Intel. You’ll be glad you did.

I can’t know for sure what the hours will really be, so it feels like a bit of a gamble. They say it’s regular hours, but that’s never actually been true for a single job I’ve had.

Are the hrs less? Some engineers in semiconductors average 55 hrs per week across a large portion of the year. Fab start-ups even more. Time is money so you need to factor that in to the 25% pay. Stress impact is something that has a long-term effect.
