Not Musk but it is apparently Softbank making the move? They seem to be going after both Intel Products and Ampere at the same time.

Announced today that Softbank would team up with Oracle and others to build AI datacenters.
Something about them building fabs too, as if anyone could make semiconductors or something.
Note to Masa Son: leading edge semiconductor manufacturing is hard
If US will not allow sale of US Steel, then they will not allow Intel sale either.
@ab - I think it does make sense - T2 and T3 CSP's don't necessarily have the business case to justify creating their own ARM-based SoC like the T1's you mentioned.
I'm totally bummed about this. I was hoping it was Elon, so we could build the cybertruck of computers..
More mindless speculation but I wondered about Softbank when they announced that they wanted to do a big investment for AI, and considering that they still own quite a bit of ARM.
Hard to imagine any takeover resulting in the company existing as it is. Just a question of whether the Board is to keep spinning off groups and divisions, or the company is taken over and spun off.
Same result and not clear what would remain of Intel as a brand, although foundry could retain the brand name.
If the company had no value then it would probably just linger on, getting smaller over time.
All the speculation shows that other companies see a lot of value in the company assets, even with the ongoing demise of x86.
@ab
Sometimes its not the product but the expertise.
This would give Prodco both established x86 and ARM design teams
Softbank buying Ampere makes zero sense. Their late to market gimmick was high core count server chips based on ARM. Spoiler... every company making major data center build out (Meta, AMZN, MSFT, Google) are already building out their own ARM data center chips already (and hence, the strategy of IFS is to build & package those chips). ARM making ARM chips is not a good idea... and they should stick to just licensing (otherwise, they create direct competition with their customers).
All hail new CEO RJJ!
