Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Is there a reasonable chance?

OK, up until this quarter, I figured 3M’s demise was basically already decided by the board. It felt like the company was just being prepped to be chopped up. Even if there was some openness to trying to make it a high-functioning, long-term business again—like it had been for big stretches of its 100+ year existence—it seemed doomed to fail. The culture’s been decimated, and the mechanisms for success have been stripped away. So, I thought the end was basically in sight, no matter what.

But after recent events—both internal and external—including this quarter’s performance and how things have been trending lately, I can almost see a faint glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, this company could actually stick around. And that the board might actually be trying to turn things around—or at least thinking, “We might as well try.”

I’m not saying I think any of this is likely. It’s just that I’m starting to wonder if I’m imagining this possibility. Thoughts?

Any rumors on when the next slice of 3M is cut out and removed?

Actually, I believe Bill Brown's approach has been working. He basically told Wallstreet 3M would put out a bunch of new NPI. The labs are hard at work, the business teams are doing their parts. 3M is at least supposed to be known for innovation. With the R&D teams getting their hands dirty, it's a step in the right direction.

Yes there’s a reasonable chance. As long as any old timers are shown the door. Hopefully the current tariff environment will be the impetus to cull 30 yr plus cattle. Very heavy drag on the company.

It appears that the company is making a concerted effort to present an image of resurgence—investing in new initiatives, showcasing optimistic projections, and reassuring employees and stakeholders of a bright future. However, behind closed doors, those with deeper insights recognize this as a strategic maneuver, a temporary facade intended to stabilize confidence while quietly bracing for financial turmoil. With mounting litigation looming and financial vulnerabilities intensifying, insiders suspect this revival is less about genuine recovery and more about a calculated preparation for an inevitable downturn. While outwardly maintaining an air of growth, the underlying reality suggests a cautious retreat before the storm fully hits.

I was amazed by number of brown nose people who congratulate Bill after earning call in social media. People who earning less and less money thanks to medicore bump in pay who make company profitable congratulate the guy who make millions on their back. C'mon people.

I'm sure the supply chain is in shambles after St. Peter left. What will we do without him and the expertise of Kearney?

Mr. Brown proclaimed we had 62 NPI's in the first quarter of 2025. He was most proud of new edge lock painter's tape and called it out specifically. The only hope for 3M is growth, which there hasn't been any since at least 2014.

Does anyone here know what the other 61 NPI's were?

How is Bill doing on the command strip supply chain?

I agree with you that it does give me more hope than I’ve had in a few years, but posting about hope on this site is asking for disaster haha

I stand by my prediction. Bankruptcy after selling off as many businesses as possible.

The so called good quarter was really mediocre at best. Growth was under GDP/IPI and profit was not impressive.

A question a smart analyst should ask is: What new markets will the company enter using the resources freed up from the Solventum spin?

@aa+1jsg0adsp - that does seem to be a strong sign. How in the world are they separating data into BGs without people knowing though?

I work in IT -- we're segmenting the data by BG.

You tell me if that means they're preparing to separate and sell off parts.

Most retired 3Mers would like to believe this...BUT BB has made it clear he despises the McKnight culture. His derogatory reference to Minnesota Nice. And everyone gets an A. The guy is driven by ONE thing. Maximize his bank account. The company will be broken into 5 or 6 shrunken 0.5Ms. He lives in a mansion in Florida. Runs the company from a yacht in Florida.

I'd even take a Desi clone these days.
