Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

10 people per manager. This is a page from the old AT&T book. 2020 Vision. Reduce headcount by 1/3 by 2020. Verizon is copying at 25% reduction by 2030. “2020 Vision” is mentioned as early as 2014 in what’s publicly available online.

@a9 Exactly! Look at how many worker bees that could have been saved for one "leader." My entire team was cut, but my AD survived? How does make sense. He's a clueless id--t that couldn't replicate what we were doing so obviously he must be saved.

This round of cuts the team size was definitely looked at and in our org we lost a significant number of managers. In the new structure, direct report span is expected as 8-10.
I still see other orgs where this was not enforced in this round, i hope this gets cleaned up in Q1/2.
Sr Director with 6 ICs is not scrappy startup.

@a9 Hard not to agree. Seems like that step is always missed durning any cuts.

My understanding on OP’s message is if they Verizon wants lean and consolidated org, they would have first remove the layer of managers with fewer ICs (10 below or sinething). U agree with OP. Vz has many layers of management.

My manager has 6 (plus contractors)

@a2 Five would be pretty bad. But the range is all over the place. I guess the OP is just picking the number since you would think there would be some standard like back in the day for cell engineers and switch engineers.

This is in no way a good metric for determining if someone is a good manager. Some of the best managers we have are also busy actually contributing (my manager included) while some with 10+ reports are useless.

Managing 9 people is still a job. Would be more receptive if you said 5.

@OP Should say reports. Plenty have less than 10 contractors and so on.
