Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Return to Office clarification

People Leaser here. The announcement will come out tomorrow 6/29 at 3 CT.

It will start on March 2 2026

You will need to report 4 days in office. The 5th day you may work from home and you can use it whatever day you want. You will keep the 4 weeks remote per year.

For any employee that lives within a 40 mile radius of a corporate location (they will go by the center of your zip code) you must come in 4 days a week. There will be no exceptions anymore and they are doing away with the HWF exception process.

Schwab will no longer hire or backfill roles unless they are in office. Very rare exceptions may be made but is subject to Schwab review and approval.

For anyone who is currently coming in (1,2,3 or 4 days a week) you will be required to come in 4 days a week. Even if you move now (and outside the 40 mile radius) they will still require you to come in person! Dont wanna see people go through that trouble and expense just to be let down.

I have no dog in the fight. I see the benefit of WFH so I hope I’m not coming across as harsh, but just wanted to clear up any misinformations.

Hopefully that answered some of your question until the email tomorrow at 3 CT! Good luck everyone

I particularly like how they chose to give Chuck's employees the bird for his birthday.

@es The work from home people in my group are the lowest performers. I don’t feel sorry for those who have to go back to the office and start doing a job they are paid for. Put your big boy pants and skirts on people. This morning I’m in my cube enjoying the smell of my co-workers bag of corn nuts and listening to her crunch as she eats.

@ew Documented flare up? How the heck do they expect me to get documentation before hand for something I have no idea when it will strike? If for some reason they deny my medical exception, I’ll just take my bedside commode to office.

@ew heard the same thing about medical crackdown. They have made getting a medical accom. prohibitely difficult and the doctor basically told me this. There will be plenty of lawsuits over this. Schwab probably doesn’t even care. Cost of doing business.

@bh nope. The exception applies only while you are in your role

@ew can confirm. This already started.

@ap
The notes said it ‘may be possible’ for people who work near sites where they reduced office footprint.

@es I am sure there are hardworking people out there that struggle with this dynamic. My own leader is in this situation. The difference here is that my manager actively cares and goes out of their way to provide presence and value to the team, even if it is done remotely. I can’t tell you how many other teammates do not do this whatsoever. It’s not hard to tell who pulls their weight and who doesn’t. Depending on your family and personal situation WFH is 100% golden ticket.

@ay Hate to see it but they are going to be more strict with medical. It will be more of you are expected to drive in and work in a cube unless you have a documented flare up of condition on that day

@a6 Exactly and those who remain remote have the least secure roles in future layoffs. So please remember this when speaking about those who are able to continue working remotely for now.

@b8 And your co-workers who work remotely - many of whom were hired as remote, feel this sentiment daily from those who are not remote. They are not eligible for promotion, will likely be top of the list for future layoffs, and feel mostly this kind of bitterness from colleagues. It’s not a golden ticket but at least for many who cannot relocate, they won’t be out of a job in the immediate future in a horrific economy.

As long as I can be flexible and switch around which day to WFH, I see it as a positive. This avoids the scenarios of having to act like an elementary school student asking if I can go to the bathroom.

What about Chicago though? I think they have been eligible to WFH full time due to limited space.

can you still get promoted if you are remote?

While not be able to apply to other roles can be a massive detriment, this doesn’t change the fact that large swathes of employees have golden tickets and can and will continue to work from home. Glad to see arbitrary and stupid rules being enforced arbitrarily and stupidly. But hey! We get the privilege of buying 15$ rice bowls in the new cafeteria while our coworkers relax at home.

HAHA...they are a "People Leaser" (daydrinker typo or Freudian slip?) who's just trying to clear up any "misinformations".

Has anyone heard an update on how they will handle remote medical exceptions?

Are promotions in the same role out of the question then for those who don’t live near an office? Technically you have to “apply” for them

How about office to office moves? Is my job portal to a different Schwab office?

@a9 obviously it was a typo. How about focusing on the fact that this person is trying to provide helpful info.

@a5 If you can get your seat assignment removed from CRE, there's a good chance that when they pull the location data in February 2026 you'll be able to stay remote.

Not mentioned here is that if you are able to stay remote, you are essentially stuck in your role forever. If you want to change roles, you'll be expected to move to that location and commute to the office.

@OP what if I currently come in 3 days and the center of my home zip is greater than 40 miles from the office? Does that imply some option available?

@OP
"Even if you move now (and outside the 40 mile radius) they will still require you to come in person!"

Is this true? I didn't hear that in any of the calls. I think if it comes up that you're outside the 40 mile range, and you don't have a seat assigned in CRE you'll be allowed to stay remote. I could imagine that if someone got a HWF exception for the 2nd half of this year, and then suddenly moved > 40 miles away, they could keep the remote exception.

Wow! So those in locations where the offices closed, are pretty much stuck in their jobs unless they move. That stinks. I guess the other option would be to get an approval but based off this, it is rare .
