Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Anybody else feel like a sitting duck?

That’s what this job has come down to. Not focusing on the work, not focusing on being productive, just constantly wondering if I’m going to be the next one. Which, ironically, could turn this whole thing into a self-fulfilling prophecy if I end up getting laid off because my performance slips from all the stress.

"And something else I saw written here, it's the high performing people who usually get sacked first."

Maybe Dell is a family employer so they keep the deadwood as Micky Dell knows they won't get jobs elsewhere. Being competent will mean you have options. A win-win?

@cc, your manager was right, it's not the manager who creates the lists of people being sacked.

And something else I saw written here, it's the high performing people who usually get sacked first.

"I've been begging my manager to protect me from the layoffs."

After the last round if layoffs we had a team meeting. Our manager was very candid with us about his complete and total inability to protect anyone from being layed off as evidenced by some of oue "best and brightest" getting the axe.

@a9+1jzn8ggnx - you would be at the top of my WFR list if I was your manager. I bet you're miserable to manage if you're actively whining to your manager to save you.

I diligently perform my duties and follow instructions, but I’m acutely aware that my job may eventually be outsourced to AI or India. I sensed these changes coming eight years ago, when few others anticipated this major shift, and I tried to raise the alarm.

I foresee a consumer backlash by 2026. People will grow frustrated with AI and outsourcing. These IT giants, with their "too big to fail" mindset, underestimate the impact of a boycott. It’s already underway—a major global company severed ties with Dell after poor support following Dell’s layoffs to cut costs. That company, which spent tens of millions on hardware, won’t return, all because Dell aimed to save less than $750,000 annually. Our team warned upper management about the risks in their business model, but they ignored us and proceeded. They still have not held anyone accountable when they did the transition.

Dell’s push for a global model, ignoring cultural nuances, doesn’t add up. Treating customers as a monolithic "global" entity is unfeasible. If they plan to fully transition to this model by August 2025, assuming everyone speaks English, they’re in for a rude awakening. This approach is just a cost-cutting tactic, centralizing support in one hub to cover two continents while neglecting the unique needs of a third continent. I suspect this is their goal by the end of August 2025.

@a5 That's a complete sh!te take. In the last year I've seen so many smart, effective, hard working resources who contributed a lot to their respective organizations be let go. We're so beyond cutting fat and dead weight at this point... when you see some of your best colleagues get laid off, it's perfectly reasonable to feel like a sitting duck. If my ticket gets punched, I'll know it had nothing to do with my performance and I'll leave with my head held high.

I've been begging my manager to protect me from the layoffs. I've been friendly with everyone for the past 6 months in the hopes of being on their good side

I've seen people who were not coasting let go. For the most part, i've seen really good people let go. Too expensive? Have other people doing the same job for less so I will just shift their work over to them?

If you feel like a sitting duck then maybe at the back of your mind you actually know that you've been coasting for a while and you're a likely candidate for the chop.

If you think you could be at risk you most definitely are...

Quarterly layoff anxiety is affecting other companies too. It's not just Dell. Deal with it as best you can. I remember the great financial crisis where the layoff was concentrated to one or two quarters. This time around it feels like it is continuous.
