Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Will we ever go back to normal?

Is this place beyond repair? I remember a time when job security was a thing. Yes, we had layoffs, but not all the fu--ing time. That's all I'm asking for. Being able to do my job without having to worry about still being employed the next day. Why is that suddenly too much to ask for?

You should expect to be monitored and evaluated by AI assistants, serving your manager/s and HR.

That along with the elimination of roles due to AI is going to make working in Tech kind of like Hunger Games, but without the actual sla-ghter.

This is no time to be wasting time doing anything which is not job related.

I was from one of the leading AI big firms. I can only tell you AI is transformative but AI is also now the excuse for everything including layoffs! Now if they need to spend on a new data center, an AI spin is a sure way to make an expenditure sound like an investment. There aren’t that many real business use cases out there in the industry to justify AI investments.

I am from tech industry. Last few years the industry was just going through waves and waves of layoffs in different forms - reorg, consolidation, performance related. etc.

It used to be that you only need to worry once a year, then it became twice a year, now it’s quarterly.

I disagree with naysayers here, turnaround is possible , note we are all forgetting that AMD or nvidia have been through sh-t times , they all recovered in the end. we need to rightsize , focus on key areas and execute to best of our ability.

Also note I was an rcg when I joined AMD ( though at intel now) and I’ve seen folks getting Laid off left/right at AMd during the times when it was still struggling to get foothold in server market , looking at them in those times it appeared company is dead but we all know where it is , trust me Intel is no where near to that situation.

""I remember a time when job security was a thing. "
OK grandpa!"

No, it is just that they can compare one era with another
and find this one serious lacking.
That is one reason why they like the young; they have nothing to compare they current situation to.
The American culture has been decimated and we are in steep decline right now.

NO

A company without a CEO is abnormal
A company without free banana is abnormal
A company without free coffee is broken badly and not normal

No.

And it isn’t just Intel.

Numbers like $4T in labor cost avoidance get thrown around with AI.

The hollowing-out of the middle class will be complete right around the time Robocop is ready to suppress the proletariat.

Client under attack from all fronts - AMD, Qualcomm, Apple and soon to be Nvidia and Mediatek.

This is also heavily funded by Microsoft since they have no confidence that Intel can remain a viable long term supplier of Windows hardware.

Those of you living in the past will have a rude awakening. Things are going to get worse, not better.

You will have to change companies if you value stability. It’s hard to come by but better at places that are not in steep decline.

What did you expect with 30 year old factories where the newest machines were 13 years old?

Intel should not be purchased by the government. It should be broken up and the pieces sold off to companies that know how to run a business. The BoD and ELT can be disbanded at that point.

@a9, just because someone remembers a time from the past does not make them a grandpa, but your comment makes you a dou--ebag.

Intel needs to be taken over by the Government now, it’s worse than USAID.

@a4... your story sounds like the typical Intel nonsense. The turnaround is just 1 year, 2 years...5 years out and then it will be wonderful endless sunshine, butterflies, and unicorns... Same story just different words each time. If people could be brought up to speed on how to create the industry leading process technologies in a year than everyone would be doing it. The problem is the bean counters who have been making the decisions for the past decade can't quantify experience in their projections. They just see older experienced employees as expensive. The reality is that losing all of that experience in short time frames is actually more expensive. Intel has done this type of brain drain multiple times in less than a decade.

It’s be cool to have Elon onboard, he’d whoop bill gates a-s any day.

The only plan is getting 18A to successfully launch. Everything else doesn’t matter, although if you layoff everyone. It’ll probably cost more in the long run.

So that’s why the layoffs will be less and less. Most of the experienced talents took the package. So now what’s left, will need to be retrained and brought up to speed. This all takes time and has been accounted for, so just another year and we should finally be up only at that point.

It’s over.

Not profitable until 2026.
No volume to fill 18A fabs after spending all that money.
Shrinking market share in data center leading to a tipping point where everyone standarizes on AMD.
Client under attack from all fronts - AMD, Qualcomm, Apple and soon to be Nvidia and Mediatek.
No credible AI roadmap.

This is a dead company. You have to be a blind monkey not to see that. I mean, what is the plan? There is no plan.
