Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Layoff vs retirement

I’m in customer care and eligible for retirement with tenure and age. I’m wondering if HR would allow me to retire with severance instead of going through the layoff?

@em 50% discount was reduced to 25% years ago.

If you have a pension, then yes as soon as you're rif and have your date, then move forward with starting retirement. I saw recently an article posted on inside.verizon.com that retirees were being given 50% discount but you had to have your lines when you officially retired to be eligible for the discount.

@a7
What benefits?
Not having to work for VZ is the biggest benefit of all!!!!

@a8 You should let them know specifically that you want to be included in the next RIF. That is how it should be done

@a7 none unless you have a pension. You also have the ability to buy into Verizon's group health plan (some older folks also get a small subsidy) and a lousy 25% discount on phone service. Talking non-union here.

@a6 like I said, if you've got spiteful management and tell them you plan to retire, they'll say good, one less severance to pay. I saw it happen with the last VSP, except they weren't retiring. They told their supervisor they got a job offer. Volunteer status removed and out the door with nothing but a new job. Just tread carefully is all I'm saying.

What benefits do retirees get?

@a5 why not. He want to get the severance package. Do you get anything if you just retire? I know as AD some people talked to SD and they were included in this RIF coming 11/20 and they properly saved others from getting selected to meet the numbers

@a4 I wouldn't advise this. If they know you plan to retire, they could remove you from the RIF list and not pay severance. I saw it happen with the last VSP. Wait until you have an off payroll date and then contact benefits. Retirement doesn't mean much anymore anyway unless you have a pension and want to "buy into" VZ benefits (just as expensive as the ACA).

Tell your boss you heard there's a layoff coming and that you'd like to volunteer. It might be too late, but you might save someone else's job. I'm in HR.

Do not retire before you’re laid off or you will not get severance. Once you have your off payroll date you can put in for retirement to start the next month.
