Do you still qualify for unemployment if you get laid off and also get severance? I’ve only been with Dell for under a year and the severance won’t last long if I get hit. I'm not sure how any of this works and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.

I got unemployment after the state calculate how many weeks of severance i received.
@ba The state telling you to pay back unemployment because you got severance is not legal. That means Dell is telling the state of texas that they are still paying you. That's not how it works!
The DEll severance (2 months or more with bonus etc) is a settlement in Massachusetts. You must provide Mass Unemployment with a copy of the settlement agreement and then can start collecting immediately. You get 30 weeks and I got about $30,000. You need to keep a log of applying to 3 jobs a week and attend some virtual training classes. Try to call them in addition to setting up a profile on their website to alert them that it is a settlement. They are very used to processing EMC/ Dell employees in Massachusetts. Return your laptop and sign the severance agreement ASAP. Get the tracking number for the laptop because sometimes they claim it was not sent back (lap tops go to the warehouse). One more thing be careful with Cobra. You must actively go into the Dell health portal and check a box saying you want it otherwise your prescriptions and health receipts will bounce. Good news you are covered for the two months even if you sign up late.
I was able to collect unemployment in Texas until my severance came through (one month or so?). Then, the state asked for some money back, and I was no longer eligible. It su-ks not being able to double dip!
@a8 not true. I saved a recent post on blind that detailed exactly how you had to fill out the forms to enable unemployment benefits from day 1. Please search it.
If you are in MA, you are eligible.
Not sure where you are, but in Texas, you can't get unemployment until they estimate your severance will run out. I didn't know this and filed right away. In hindsight, I should've waited to file until after the 9 months expired.
Thank you!
Go to the department of labor site for your state, it will list the conditions for getting unemployment, they have become more restrictive in the last decade but are specific to each state. You should get at least two months of severance plus a week for every year from Dell.
Either way, don't stress about it, there are a lot of jobs out there and they pay much better than Dell does, you will be much better off.
Depends on your state, I believe.
