Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

I'm so sick of the CONSTANT layoffs...

Even though I've never had any real reason to worry, it's just annoying and stressful because at the end of the day, anybody can be on the chopping block. Luckily for the last 6 years, not a single person on my team has been let go. I think that maybe my salary + IC level is taken into consideration as well; considering I'm only an IC7 lol.

I wonder if there is "cussion" to being in FED? Then again, the org I'm in is significantly larger on the corporate side and they very rarely get hit, either.

Layoffs can benefit a company by ensuring it retains employees who actively drive the business forward, rather than those who are simply comfortable handling internal tasks. Don’t see why Dell needs to maintain such a large backend workforce.

@av - I've had at least 15 Fed peers disappear in the last year. Fed sales, support, product, engineering, PS, and field have all been hit. Feel fortunate you haven't known anyone.

@a1 Most, if not all managers were "demoted" to IC's during this reorg. Nothing really changed other than they can't approve your time off or things like that. They were not "demoted" either. They still have the same job title but in the eyes of HR, they simply are not a manager anymore. They were placed as "Product owners" or "Project Managers" basically.

The pay didn't decrease or anything like that but, it was quite literally to fill numbers. Directors were required to have 20 direct reports, VP's had to have I think 10 direct reports.

Managers were downgraded to IC's in order to fulfill these numbers for directors and above.

Minus that fiasco, the people let go in FED i'm willing to bet were all in the sales org.

@a8 That makes sense but, who determines performance and how well someone is liked? Plenty of people who are let go are well liked and preform well

I've spent a decade in Dell management. When layoffs happen, no one is talking about grade levels or pay. It's 100% about performance, location, or how well you're liked.

A lot of people in FED were let go and some managers demoted to ICs.
