If you're still sticking around to get sabbatical payout, reconsider

I hear a lot of people are delaying the job search because they want to stick around until get are eligible for sabbatical.
Please reconsider. I had a lengthy back and forth with HR, and even if the website states that you are already eligible, they won't pay you squat once you leave because, according to HR:

This one-time adjustment credit is unearned time off to which the employee otherwise has no entitlement, including no entitlement to a payout at termination of employment.

So please for the love of ever loving jesus, don't use sabbatical as a reason to stall on your job search. Move on, there are better things out there I promise.

@az good to know that. I don't think my termination date will be before the end of June so even if I get notified before my sabbatical eligibility date I should be eligible

This is 100% not true. Intel changed sabbatical because eligible sabbatical time is accounted for as a liability in GAAP. Intel policy is to pay out eligible sabbatical time.

If you are eligible for sabbatical on your termination date, you will be paid out. If you are not eligible for sabbatical, you don’t get anything. So if you have 3.99 years accrued towards your 4 years sabbatical on your termination date, you get nothing.

It’s pretty easy to look this sh-t up, folks.

My eligibility is in 3 weeks June 17th. I don't know how that is going to work out. I am in CA as well

@a7 is correct, my friend was impacted last September and claimed the full sabbatical and 6 weeks of vacation, got paid for sabbatical 8 weeks and 5 weeks vacation, based in Santa Clara, CA

@a9 go to circuit and search for sabbatical. Go to the FAQ. Click the bullets under "updated sabbatical program" and it explains it there. If you earned your sabbatical earlier then I don't think it is affected and I think you have to be paid out.

OP is unfortunately correct. When they updated the sabbatical policy last year they grandfathered in sabbatical earning in progress but added some fine print eliminating payouts at exit. So take those sabbaticals!

@a7 where did you see that information? I am coming up on earning my sabbatical this year and reside in California and this information would be useful

If you are based in California, you will get that paid in full. And you get qualified for up to 5 weeks of untaken accumulated over the years vacation pay. Not sure about the law in other locations

Why would one not get an earned sabbatical payout ? If you completed the time and have not been notified by that date you are eligible for the payout as written in employment letter

It is too late to take it. It won't get approved if you are on the hit list.
