The UGH/OPTUM "Ghost" Layoff- Avoiding WARN ... How 30,000+ People Disappear in One Day

The Reality for 2025-2026: As of 2025, UnitedHealth Group (UHG/Optum) owns and operates nearly 2,700 separate sub-companies (legal entities). When an employee hears that 30,000 coworkers are being cut, they expect to see a massive legal alarm or a national news headline. But UHG/Optum rarely triggers one, hence no WARN Act notices, or very rare.

They know the loopholes for unreportable numbers to keep the public, the government, and us employees in the dark.

And ​this doesn't even include the thousands of remote workers. UHG/Optums 'legal' argument is basically there cannot be a 'mass' firing in a single living room.... even if 100 are on a Teams call.

@a7 Agree, not that they never have WARN notices- but they can very easily avoid it.

@a6 That was just a number... point was trying to explain how they can avoid WARN with a large number layoff- since many on here have been asking. There are other legal ways as well to avoid using the 'No WARN Act notice' in a lawsuit , like when you sign severance papers- you are agreeing not to take any legal action against them.

There was a very large number in 2023 as someone mentioned, in one day- all across the board... Many speculated it was over 35,000, calling it the 'Massacre of 23'. My director said after it was mainly due to projected medicare reimbursement cuts for 2024, and the CMS adjustment models of how claims should be paid out- which can tighten margins for insurance companies... but who knows.

I guess we will see what happens tomorrow.

They filed WARNS last year. There was one in NJ in October. The threshold question is are they cutting the exact amount of people from a single HQ/hospital at one time. Often times the answer is no.
