Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

RTO based layoff - hours at office. Convert exempt to non-exempt

LBT is building a system where manager will get report for employee to be minimum 32 hours at office .
Ideas discussed at ET+ HR :

  1. Add entry exit badge
  2. Add computer login based tracking ( remote employee)
  3. If < 32 hours . Exception generated and manager need to override in system
  4. Convert all blue badge employees to non-exempt to legally track it time sheet
  5. Grade 10+ will be excluded from teaching specially VPs

@gk This has already happened, with a bunch of people selected because they FAFO.

The company doesn't give out many warnings. The data is merely collected then acted upon when it is time to remove headcount.

New hiring will continue to happen and they will use the performance based reductions to manage the overall headcount.

I suppose because this site is full of trolls that few will admit that the situation has changed but as the company gets smaller, individual effort will get more attention.

Every now and then the script gets flipped, and the situation is not what it once was.

Question for everyone working from home. Is it feasible to outsource your role to a low cost market?

@ga If you want to believe that nothing has changed, then go for it and FAFO.

Too much focus on badging out, when the badge RFID chip has ALWAYS logged a person out of the fab and out of the building.

The difference is that the company used to pay no attention to what individuals were actually doing, but as headcount shrinks it will be like the tide going out.

Then you find out who has been swimming na--d.

its coming

This will all ultimately backfire.

If you give flexibility, you will get flexibility.
Force me onto campus for 8 hours a day - say bye-bye to the 11pm meetings with Asia, 5am meetings with Israel. And bye-bye to any weekend work or anything meaningful over 40 hrs. (I'm teetering on 60 this week while on campus 4 days)

If they want to terminate me over working 40 hours, so be it. If the powers-that-be want rid of me, they will find a way. I could be canned tomorrow, and I am prepared for it.

@c1
And why would that change? All internal comms say return to office x days a week.
There has been absolutely nothing said about staying after lunch. You just need to show up for a period of time.

@c9 Believe what you will, but private cell phones have been monitored on-campus for some time now. It's not rocket science.

There is no need to badge out. The badge has an RFID chip in it, and that is tracked everywhere on campus.

Anyone who thinks they are getting away with something should consider being more motivated to contribute than to be a lazy slacker.

Don't try to be more productive for Intel, do it for yourself.

Performance management is coming, whether it is Amazon-style PIP or merely enforcement of existing policies.

It is needed in order to weed out the remaining low performers and get the company more serious about productivity.

Cameras have been AI enabled for some time, and are recording you throughout the facility, but especially when you badge in or out.

The badges themselves have RFID so are doing the same thing.

The company has long been using automation to monitor all network activity, and is claimed to be monitoring local cell usage as well. This goes back a long ways, and was originally for IP protection, but has been used in the past few layoffs to pick out people who are on CPM and exit them without a package. It is said that is for legal reasons, to protect the company in any future lawsuit.

See if managers are given an A/R to get more serious about cloud ranking and IR ratings, and if that leads to periodic removal of the bottom 5%.

All that aside, anyone working in the fabs will have to get used to having smaller teams and not getting to spend 2/3 of their shift in the cafe. That only ever happened due to the massive excess capacity the company maintained, and those days are done.

They are going to do the exit badge for sure. Simple to implement. If you don't badge out they will assume you didnt spend the full day and you will be hit.

@ac

Wouldn't you need to badge swipe OUT to accurately track lunch duration and when you leave? Can't speak for all sites, but mine only requires a badge swipe to enter. I only badge swipe 1-2x a day. Obviously they could implement a swipe out requirement, but then there would be no hiding what they're doing.

Rules govern the exempt / non-exempt classification, so I'm not so sure they could.

Besides, you are assuming corporate isn't already tracking you. The infrastructure is all there, right down to facial recognition (warning signs are posted everywhere). Might as well shove a GPS tracker up my ar-e.

Tracking and monitoring will be a way of life regardless of the exact methods. It is too easy to do. During performance reviews managers will generate reports and then use them like the old 360 feedback except this will be data based. It is hard to argue with badge scans that show you don't arrive until 9am, take 1.5 hour lunch, and leave at 4. Maybe they will even make you scan your badge when you get a cup of free coffee.

@a6 you are on point.

May be better they add turnstiles at office so tracking is easy. How much time stay logged in will be too much. Although some company like chase/accenture/ bofa does it and very common in fintech.

Microsoft has inbuilt feature of recording all user activities and AI can search it.

@a1 OP is pretty close on this. You may not like it, but all indications are they will:

  1. Track your badge use
  2. Track when you log in and how long you stay logged in
  3. Track whether you're connected to VPN
  4. Track (via software) what you're doing on your computer when you're logged in.

It's unlikely they'll convert exempt to non-exempt (they'd pay a fortune in overtime), but they more than likely will be doing the rest.
