Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

When Verizon doubled down on 5G, we also doubled our debt.

Between $50B in spectrum, and billions more in buildout, we flushed money down the toilet to be able to say we had “Real 5G”. Users didn’t care. A rose by any other name.

Incremental speed increases to keep networks delivering richer content within user expectations is sufficient. Aside from that, they want USABLE, contiguous signal.

Not full bars at a busy lunch spot and all your apps are saying “No Internet Connection”. Not SOS at the same cabin in the mountains from 3 years ago when you still had 3G service.

When a brand has substance, your reputation precedes you and you can ki-l it each quarter with cheesy or basic advertising. When a brand is commoditized, and differentiators are all removed, the GLUE that kept that 1% churn rate is gone.

That's all Lowell. Another genius who left the company $100 MIL richer, and took stuff away from us at the same time.

@aa we literally traded rock-solid “make before break” CDMA/3G voice for flaky “leap before you look” LTE/VoLTE.

How much did Lowell get paid to do this?

You're right. There are so many problems that have brought us to this point. Outside looking in: (I recently left the company)

  • Lowell McAdam massively overpaid for Vodafone's share of VZW. $112 billion, most of it financed with debt. It wouldn't be worth half that today.

  • Fixed wireless is a complete and total fantasy and a total bust. The take rate and return rate on 5G Home are horrendous. They'll never make their money back. The entire mmWave auction was a government swindle.

  • Verizon could have bought the 600mhz that went to T-Mobile that they are now using to dominate them in the marketplace. Instead, Verizon wasted billions on Yahoo and AOL and Bluejeans and Tracfone

  • You cannot charge a premium price, the highest in the industry, and offshore all of (nearly all of) your Tier 1 and Tire 2 customer service. Then, to add insult to injury, you make the stores 100% sales only, and give customers no place to go.

Customers are firing Verizon left and right and the company deserves everything that is happening to them. Schulman will try and cut his way out of it, but without extremely aggressive (and expensive) promotions and price cuts, They will be a third place carrier permanently.

Once the dividend is cut, the stock will plunge even further. The company won't even be worth what their debt load is. Perhaps private equity will buy it up.
