Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Twenty-two days

So we’re supposed to sit here for twenty-two days, wondering if we still have jobs. Twenty-two days of stress, rumors, and sleepless nights. It’s unbelievable how inhumane this process is. They could have given us a week’s notice, even a few days. But no, they’d rather drag it out and make everyone suffer.

@av+1k8r4n5xw Assuming you are talking about an end of year RIF situation. You would receive a full STI but it will be paid in March like everyone else. If you are talking about a voluntary termination (not retirement), you must be on the payroll as of 12/31 to qualify for STI for 2025, again, paid in March.

@av It's prorated based on the target for your level.

I let my AD know after the vsp last year that if a rif came along to put my name in. Does anyone know or speculate if we would get the STI payout next year? I think I remember reading that if you are employed up to the Dec 20 you are eligible.

They do give you notice. It's called the RIF notification period. Warn notices are not always required and believe me, if you've been here long enough, you know how Verizon gets around them. Typical RIF notice (excluding WARN scenarios) is 30 days before off payroll, so with the end of the payroll year at 12/19, back that up 30 days and there you go. And there have been times that they start the notifications on Wednesday due to the number to cover and the available management to cover them. I really don't know what that extra 22 days of notice would give you. They certainly aren't going to let you find an internal job if you are on the list. Having said all that, hopefully there is no end of year RIF this year and you can breathe for a little longer. You know, drag out the misery.

If he wants to fix this place he should read the emperor's new clothes ,and then he will realize that from his vice presidents down to his first liners on the wireline side no one knows anything about this place... Terrible decisions are made with no repercussions ... and they are all just telling him how great things are.

@a6 this is absolutely false, you just start here?

For the last 15 years, layoffs are never "announced" directly, always in some email or all hands speeches referring to making verizon more effecient and lean (2016 John Stratton talk that preceded the first massive RIF), and ALWAYS on Thursdays before a pay check.

100% of the time.

Hi, recruiter at T-Mobile here. We hate to see things like this happen. We know that Verizon has spent a lot of money training you and making you excellent at what you do. We would love for you to bring your experience to our company. They may not appreciate you or see your value but we do. We encourage you to explore the careers page at T-Mobile dot com and bring your knowledge to us.

A point I never see get made is how frustrating it is to deal with an even worse job market just because you worked hard. Yes, I might survive the next rif, or maybe the next two, but three rifs from now there will be so many unemployed white collar workers that it would put us in a worse spot. Sc--wed if you are riffed now and even more sc--wed if you are riffed later, really demotivating stuff.

And tomorrow it will be 21 days. Just put the Jeopardy theme on repeat and it will over before you know it.

@a7
Based on a lot of things.
Historical precedent.
Conversations around the business.
The timing around recent announcements.
Maybe some other things, too.
If you've been here more than a handful of years you can read the signs.

@a6 , why? Based on what? These vague responses on this site just drive me crazy. Absolutely useless!

Stop believing the November 20 rumors that trolls are selling. It is a self feeding rumor with no merit.

Warn notice has to be 60 days in advance of final day. Historically it is Thursday before the final paycheck in October. If it was November 20, people would see the notice before they were notified.

As much as it su-ks, we are being told that this ya coming and we will get a severance package. 22 days of preparing is better than 21 and many companies don’t give you the amount of severance Verizon does.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the severance payouts start decreasing over the next year.
