Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Let this be a lesson to you….

Walmart and layoffs go together. The strategic direction is to eventually get rid of all the legacy software, support and processes, then turn all tech over to their ‘partners’ (outsourced contractors) to be run from offshore. Why continue the money drain of the old ISD division? Remember when those boneheads put Harvest in place? Remember how they brought in all those offshores and made associates train their replacements? So now we’re seeing the logical next steps.

So don’t fool yourself. Merchants and buyers beware, AI can do everything you can do. Tech guys beware, they see savings in reducing their butts-in-seats costs, so you’re on the way out, too. E-commerce folks, hate to say this- but you’re probably out soon.

Those at the distribution centers will be ok. Transportation will be fine. Stores are always understaffed so it will be okay there.

If you’re actually in Bentonville, it’s time to get out. Not only does it suk there, you’ll be stranded looking for work once you laid off.

For tech guys, there’s a ton of work in Austin. Lots of AI and development there. Southern California has tons of aerospace related tech work and a lot of defense related tech.

Just get out of Walmart, get out of Bentonville and start enjoying life.

I wonder if WM Top Executives look at this site? They should.

When I started at ISD in 2008, I was shocked at how far behind the technology curve Walmart was. They have always claimed to be a tech leader but frankly I didn't see it while I was there. I think they see something shiny and new then try to chase after it. I left Walmart and couldn't be happier now. BTW, I actually had a Walmart SVP tell me that I was "too ethical" in my approach to an issue I brought to his attention. Really? Too ethical?

Harvest was a desperate and poor effort to try to save ISD at a time the company outgrew the ability of dgtc to support it. It forced the company to look for help from silicon valley and it's been mostly a cr-p show ever since. Without the business success of store pickup walmart would be in serious trouble. So many more costly IT failures then deliveries over the past 15 years then people realize. Mark Lore fiasco is the most costly miss in walmart history and should've costed Doug's job. Tech has really done nothing innovative on its own in a decade. Just pours money into vendors with little success rates while a surprising number of legacy homegrown systems still run operations. So much wasted money on cr-ppy eol 3rd party solutions that have Tech all the leverage on walmart because of the cr-ppy tech leadership that never actually understands how their own company actual operates. Im sure there was some understandable fat to cut this time but many they will regret. Have fun paying the extended support costs and supporting your operations without the knowledge you just cut.

That is one to noodle - turning the old HO into a STEM university. I’d say about 20 years too late for the Walton clan. Has anyone looked into the money Suresh has funneled into the universities in India? He started this some time ago so they are already ahead of the game. The Walton university will graduate x2 levels which is what was just laid off in bulk. Why aren’t the Waltons investing in bringing wide scale tech startups to the area that will bring more tenured tech associates here?

@a5 fully remote jobs are becoming a rarity. Don’t count on that

@OP Lmao at moving to California cess pool or Austin which is little California. If you are in tech and know your stuff a fully remote job should be easy to nab. Stay away from high cost of living/high tax hellholes cities.

Wow Project Harvest, now there's a blast from the past master class in dummphukkary.

Add to your solid speculation, toss in the thick irony of them turning the old HO into a STEM university.
