Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Leave Global Projects

I left EM a little while ago to move to booming data center industry where they need capital projects people and pay better

Do some research and apply. Why not see?
Base Salary a little lower than EM but more than made up with near term cash and stock

Example. CL27/28 with 15 years experience can get you this
Base: 250k
Annual cash bonus: 20%
Stocks: $800k-$1.2M spread over next 4 years. No ridiculous 3 and 7 year waiting to get couple hundred XOM shares.
Basically $500-600k+ per year
And even know some CL 28/29 folks that are looking and can get closer to $800k all-in.

Or you can stick around and work with disrespectful people like Dan W or Carman M!
Good luck!

Woohoo got my offer! TPM
Agree better compensation structure. Took a few weeks to go through the interview loop which was four 45 minute calls.

Agree with OP as I have personally experienced this better total compensation happening now in data center industry. And I don’t think Company includes this in benchmarking though really should for capital projects

And continuing to see and deal with people like Dan W in the SLT made my decision easy to leave last year. At least I have heard CM is moving out. Good luck all.

Smart move. Hyperscalers will need alot of Project management capability given CAPEX projections. If you are ranked in bottom half, you should look for opportunties. XOM is known for its project execution of big complex projects (serial number 1 projects) that have never been done before, so your experience will be valued elsewhere. Start networking with those that have left, plus hyperscaler RSU/Stock comp are bigger and more valuable than XOM. TIME TO EXPLORE once you have 5+ years experience and ranked in bottom 3 quintiles (your future at XOM is lousy in bottom 3 quintiles)

@a4 agree 100% what you just said. Like a frog in the pond until I had to leave XOM i believe in the job security, competitive pay, great pension XOM and HR sold to us. After leaving I quickly learned XOM total compensation is not competitive at all (even with its OnG peers). So like I if you end up be better total compensation (base + bonus and or stocks) you will come out much ahead and even without XOMs 10% ish pension yearly contribution. So dont be afraid to do the math and leave if you are able to. XOM is not what is sold as, salaries lacking, no bonuses until certain levels, and dog fight dog culture with constant gaslighting. On top they keep touting BTC that doesnt produce much quality work.

@a8 well, the unfortunate truth is BTC employees will never be able to close a gap between them and a US based employee purely from a capability point of view. The Indian culture is less disciplined and favors more copy catting and mediocre. The company has accepted the (lower) quality of work they want and DW and his cronies are okay with it since it doesnt directly impact them since they have golden parachutes.

I’m glad someone finally said what everyone thinks about CM out loud. Villains don’t think they’re villains… she’s pushed the behavior boundary; if she continues, she becomes more liability then achievement, which is when DW cuts the cord over night!

@cj it is true with every VP actually - can vouch for others who are “nice”. CM’s actions are just visible.

@b3 Exactly I feel this cut will be announced sometime before April 2027. They have done a lot for their PDS this year...

@bm at mine, the first year is annually; second year is bi annual ; third year quarterly; 4th bi monthly

@bb really? Because most of those companies actually pay the pro rated stock out monthly or quarterly, not annually

Pension is worth roughly 13-20% of your base salary. So if your comparable job can give you bonus more than this amount, and you can save instead of spending it, you will come out ahead.

Seems like companies generating AI get bigger and more powerful and other companies will be shrinking and consuming their products so if you can get a job in those industries would be a better career

I thought GP was another Flavor of the decade group to be in like supply chain. They have their paws into everything.

I think i should share my experience as well. Did that and lost my job from FANG right before my stock was about to vest (second year). Bonus struxture varied by groups and i ended up making around 300k for two years (was making 280 at xom minus RSUs). Now i am at a smaller project company. My work life balance has been definitely better and stress level is much lower. The only thing i miss is the collective intelligence is way higher at EM.

Well I listened to a session yesterday about GP talent/org and the brutal truth basically said was we need to change and do better to help BTC as their capability is behind what is wished. It is taking too long to get them competent. Umm so strategy is to then double down? Good one Dan W. We all knew you had terrible behaviors and why not also be incompetent.

Let’s prioritize low cost/low skill resources and hipos that don’t have experience while cutting the capable/proven headcount.

@a3 ok HR/Boomer. Do the math. Would you rather make several hundred K more per year with no pension at end or make much less with a chance you can get to full pension. Particularly given the recent signals and behaviors of the company and senior leaders. Hmmm.
And even people in their mid 40s are better off leaving. They can make much more and still get discounted pension LS they can invest

Yup. just search or use AI to get info on total compensation for a technical program manager. Level 6 or level 7 at the big companies. Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon. I bet these aren’t in the compensation benchmarking survey.
