Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

When is severance payed out?

So, I’m in NJ and WARN Act seems to say they must give us 90 day notice of layoff.
Does that mean if I’m told on 11/20, I would remain on the payroll until 2/20/26? After that, the severance would be paid at 2 wks per yr of service? I keep hearing “they need to be off the books” in 2025. Does anyone have credible information on how that plays out?

@ed The only STI you receive is the 2025 STI that will be paid out at 100% (regardless of what percentage the company winds up paying employees in Feb) as part of the severance package. There is no "additional" STI.

If you are notified on Thursday but roll off payroll on 1/20, do you receive the 100% STI severance payout in addition to the normal 2025 STI payout since you were on payroll through the whole 2025 year?

@d6 technically yes, but the company can do anything they want.

If we're still on the books as employed until J20 or F20 of 2026, does that mean vacation is accrued on J20 and F20 as well? It isn't a ton of time, but its time all the same that'll be paid out.

Please search NJ Warn Act for the correct answer. I was an associate director and live in NJ. I was notified 12/30/24 and off boarded 3;28/25. The NJ Warn Act kicks in when the % of NJ employees hits a specific % of total notified. With 15k employees impacted, I expect that threshold has been met. Verizon follows all rules to the letter and I have never seen them pay the extra months severance to avoid the 90 days notice. The typical package is 2 weeks for every year of service to include a prorated amount for partial years. After notification their outsourced partner assisting them will reach out to assist with resume creation, assistance with job searches, etc. You should also receive a letter from HR indication you are eligible for unemployment, which helped.

A company is not always required to provide notice if it offers severance benefits, but it must comply with the WARN Act or state laws for mass layoffs and plant closings.

If an employer fails to give the required 60 days' notice under the federal WARN Act, it can provide a severance package instead of notice. The severance package can serve as payment in lieu of notice and may be used to offset any damages the company owes. However, the severance package must be "voluntary," meaning it isn't already required by another law, contract, or company policy.

Key points about WARN Act and severance

WARN Act notice: For qualifying employers, the federal WARN Act requires 60 days' advance written notice for mass layoffs or plant closings.

Severance as pay in lieu of notice: An employer can offer a severance package as an alternative to the 60-day notice period. This package can include pay and benefits for the 60 days.

Offsetting damages: If an employer provides a voluntary severance package, it can be used to offset the back pay and benefits the company would otherwise owe for violating the WARN Act.

Voluntary payments: The severance package must be "voluntary," meaning it's not something the company is already legally required to pay under a separate law, contract, or established company policy. If it is a mandatory payment, it cannot be offset against WARN damages.

State-level laws: Some states have their own "WARN" acts that may require longer notice periods or have different requirements than the federal law.

If you’re in the Ashburn office, VA follows the federal WARN process, so 60 days. If the other post about the entire timeline and details turns out to be correct, you’d be on payroll working from home doing transition work until 1/20/2026.

@ac It depends on the state of residence and not the VZ headquarters of NJ. If you're remote and based in VA, you have to follow that state's WARN notice rules.

The 90 day notice that is specified in the WARN act simply means that the corporation must notify the state in which the layoff will be happening 90 days in advance of the actual way off. Keep in mind that the company only needs to file their WARN notice in the state where their corporate headquarters sits. In this case, Verizon employees need to check the worn act for the New York corporate office or Bedmister, New Jersey.

If you are laid off, you will have until 12/20 to gather your belongings and leave the office. Honestly, once you’re notified of your layoff status, you can spend the next month working from home. Start filling for unemployment immediately, even if you get the severance. It takes the government a while to process you UE request so the earlier you start filling the better. You’ll receive your severance two weeks after your last day of work (12/20). Your package will be calculated at 2 weeks for every year of Verizon service

@a4 this is what I was looking for! Thank you.

I will try to look now, so I guess we all did sign somewhere holding the company responsible for providing severance?

If that is the case, then yeah, atleast there will be a severance. I was thinking since this guy is hiring his paypal friends for multiple millions... no way he pays everyone. But I was wrong, thank god.

I believe your interpretation is correct. 90 days on payroll and then you get severance, accrued vacation, sti and lti payouts

Yes if Warn Act applies then you will be off boarded 90 days after notification and that off boarding date is when your severance time starts based on the package. They would also have the option to pay you for an additional month in your severance instead, but I am not aware of Verizon ever doing that.

So i'm confused by the "severance" because I have googled it and asked Chatgpt.... it says there is no requirement for a company to give severance? So, are we just saying this before historically they have done this?

Educate me please, someone, anyone lol

I understand that maybe they have done this in the past but Dan is not playing around here, his goal is shareholder wealth at the end of the day.
