Thread regarding Optum layoffs

What does a surprise bad feedback mean?

My spouse got a surprise bad evaluation on her annual feedback. They have an upcoming meeting with director and manager this week. Is she being let go? How long usually she can stay on the team before fully let go?

Or is it a CAP and she can stay for a few months?

It's a setup for you to leave either by not giving a raise or rrp. The 2 is also used as a base to lay you off. Your wife could take the upcoming voluntary separation. I would think hard about after getting a 2.

Just means she failed the popularity contest no connection to actual performance. So if over all rank of 2 pack your bags now on death row and next layoff round you will be on the list. Most managers are too lazy to start the CAP /PIP. Feedback at this company is a joke just paper shuffling they do every year. Fighting a rating waste of time but if it makes you feel good go for it the rating wont change and now you have another target on your back. You are being shunned nothing you can do to change it

If the CAP or rating of 2 has no basis, an Internal Dispute Review (IDR) can be filed.

In a lot of cases it is justification to be let go later. This has happened many times before. Not saying it will happen but generally the steps are Bad Review > CAP > Termination. Sometimes they skip the CAP step if they are already doing layoffs.

They did this to me my manger made up a scenario in which I was refusing to do work and said I will get a CAP it was a real push out!! I left bcus I couldn’t handle all of the catty behavior. They want you out so there’s no unemployment nor severance pay. It’s cheaper if you quit. Despite this I left and I am in a better company with a better team and more pay. Don’t be afraid to leave for your own sake!

CAP is the same as a PIP at other companies. They just call it a CAP.

  • “stack ranking”, not tanking

As others have said, this reeks of collateral damage from a stack tanking (rank & yank, like Enron). They needed more 2s so the chose some 3s and forced them down to 2s. This is very a very common thing at Optum.

What is CAP process?

Don’t quit! They will have the meeting to scare her hoping she will quit and then there’s no RIF payout. Once a 2 she goes on a CAP. Still don’t quit no matter how bad or she won’t collect unemployment. Even if fired in the state of mn you collect unemployment. They might say it won’t last long etc. it will. Still tough it out so even if it comes down to firing she collects unemployment. It’s been indicated layoffs are Feb and March and probably every month after IMO. She will never recover from the 2 as someone wants her gone higher up. If you quit no unemployment.

Feedback is not supposed to be a suprise. She can definitely challenge any of the issues that she has never received any feedback on.

Likely means they had to put somebody in the 2 range (for quota reasons) and when managers were fighting over who draws the short stick, it ended up being her. Thus, the surprise because, until this point, she was in line for a 3.
