Raise and LR

I assume it's uncommon to get a raise/promo immediately followed by an LR... On the other hand, aren't these separate decisions often made by different people?

When Cisco had formal wage freezes they still did promotions with no raises. They are known as "dry promotions." As management liked to say, "congratulations, you now rank worse relative to your peers and you get nothing for it!"

Raise or promotion won’t change whether you are LR’d. During the last cull, someone on my team finally made it to a Grade 10 with manager title. Laid off the following week. The severance was higher because of the promo.

@a3 LR or not, your reply is BS, no one is getting "blind date" 1:1 meetings scheduled five days in advance with their calendar cleared for ever after that. Why do people post this nonsense?

Merit budget was very tight, and no way they would allocate money to someone they know is getting LR’ed when it could have been used on someone that fits their future plans. These increases have to be approved starting with Director up and including the SVP. If you got a raise you should be safe for May.

@db I think the first responder was saying the manager often doesn't have the LR list and management won't tell them at that time

A good manager wouldn't have wasted merit $ on someone they know they're going to LR. That said, if it a whole group or org, then it could happen as the manager/director may not have known. They have stooped to that level a few times to LR teams on a group call. Tasteless and classless but there's precedence.

@a1 I was just explaining to somebody that this exact logic could be the case so I'm not surprised. You're right that it's a shame if they get money that could have gone to somebody else. On the other hand, if they get a raise their severance will get bigger so good for them.

@a1 Thanks for sharing. Can I ask do you guys as leaders normally throw calendar invites on employees calendar 5 days ahead if they are being LR’d? And if so, do you normally remove them from all other calendar invites there afterwards? I’m basically asking because I got an odd invite for Thursday 5 days in advance for a 10:30am am 1-1. Nothing in it. It just looks like my calendar 1-1 was changed oddly post earnings

A raise or promo does NOT protect you from LR. One of the issues leaders face when making merit recommendations during focal cycles is that our leadership typically will not share who’s getting LRd prior to us allocating budget to them. So we do our best, and sometimes the people we just gave x% of our merit budget to get LR’d weeks later. It’s a total waste and inefficient process. So no, just because you get merit or promo doesn’t mean you are safe at all.
