Declaring layoff while interview

Hi, got laid off a month ago , on my garden leave, do you guys mention about your layoff while interview, I understand they would found out..and it's not about hiding, frankly if they specifically ask I would be truthful but otherwise if they found out later background check would that be a red flag?

I was laid off from several companies. The interview ended there. They automatically assumed it meant something bad about me. I think if you've only been laid off once in your career it's fine to say.

@rw and they never call back regardless how good the interview went

Yes, disclosing getting laid off is perfectly fine in an interview.

There is no shame in explaining you were laid off. It happened to me twice. They will ask you why you left your last company or what brings you to the job market. You simply explain your position was eliminated due to restructuring. I have found They were always genuinely understanding and even sympathetic, and they move on to the next question.

@gn

It IS A STIGMA and a badge of shame in the USA.

The minute you say you've been laidoff due to restructuring or whatever excuse, reason even though most companies are laying off since 2023, the prospective employer thinks, why was this job candidate the loser who was unfortunate enough to not get a chair in the game of musical chairs??!!

Why was this job candidate chosen to be amongst those laidoff??

Then the prospective employer starts to think there's something wrong or defective with the job candidate because the candidate was chosen to be amongst the unlucky ones.

@gn have you been rif'ed and looking for a new? Stop assuming and commenting things that aren't the way then. I wish you would have been my next employer or they had the same understanding as you

@ec It's not a stigma here either. Everyone in the Financial services industry knows everyone is laying off and it's all over the news that Citi is laying off 20k people. Citi did that on purpose to drive stock down. No employer worth working for is going to hold it against you for a company that is restructuring and you are just a number among 20k. Stop creating problems that aren't problems.

Outside of the "United" States of America, getting Laidoff is Not as much of a stigma, embarrassment or Scarlett letter.

USA HR personnel and companies are cruel, callous and merciless even during recessions when mass layoffs abound.

I wasn't in this situation , buy I wouldn't mentioned that unless asked directly , which I think is not customary. if asked about reasons for leaving C , I would have listed the regular reasons you mention in this type of question.
all that potential employer can check is the dates of employment ( unless, of course, he /she personally knows your direct manager and starts asking around). you are still with the company until the official separation date. my friends were saying they were still employed up to the last day of the separation month.

Depends on location and if you’re interviewing externally. In the UK I started the interview process (externally) whilst they were consulting with us on laying the team off. When asked reason for wanting to leave at interview, I said my role is moving to a low cost area but I don’t have the exact timescales yet. My separation letter confirmed that
references would only confirmed start and end dates and would not mention redundancy. Not that it’s anything to be ashamed of.

Citi is laying off 20k people. It's in the news. So is everyone else. It's not like you got fired. Be honest.

@a3 will it look that being lied if not mentioned earlier and they found later in verification?

Was successful in just being truthful and saying that I was laid off due to restructuring (different organization). Should not be a problem, in general. Just explain it was a reorganization/restructuring. I think its generally expected now in today's corporate climate.
