Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Honestly, what are we coders supposed to do now?

Bodies keep piling up out there with layoffs left and right. I’ve managed to save some money and made some investments, but who knows what will happen if the economy keeps sliding the way it is. I’ve even thought about starting a small niche business, but let’s be real, that feels like a pipedream right now. I’ve been searching for jobs way outside my usual skill set, and it’s honestly scary realizing how fast your relevance is slipping away.

@d4, and that there is the attitude behind why the trades folks don't give a hoot about Intel layoffs in the community.

You got that wrong. I used the term oligarch...and...I believe we weren't organized enough on Jan 6th to get the job done. When the time comes to storm our Bastille I know I can count on you to do nothing but what you do best.... set around whining about who's a liberal or not.

@a5 a phd neither means that you are smart or employable. People have phd's in leisure studies... When I was in college and working in a pizza restaurant the manager had a phd in humanities... he made a $1.50 more than I did.

@ae ... a true sign of a hard left individual... they use terms like oligarch. Who speaks this way except for the liberals from from universities with liberal arts degrees who don't really contribute to society but still collect a pay check. Look up the true definition of the word and you will find that it really isn't being used it its defined form.

@a5 PhD in computational chemistry? Is that what you meant? Because I’m not shocked he’s having trouble getting a job, that’s a pretty useless field to get a PhD in.

That's Crony-Capitalist America. First it was the textile workers and we said nothing, then it was the steel workers and we said nothing, then it was the auto workers and we said nothing, then it was small appliance/electronics manufacturing and we said nothing.

News Flash: It's time to find another skill where the oligarchs will pay a decent wage for a few years until they can figure out how to have it done cheeper somewhere else.

Let me guess: you have smooth pristine hands, patterned socks, a Patagonia puffer vest, and a dorky textured quiff.

Learn to plumb.

Seriously.
Skilled tradespeople are and will continue to be in high demand.
Do you have the capacity to learn hands-on, actual "manly-man" type of work?
A lot of techies are really clueless when it comes to common sense.
And a lot of them look down upon those who work with their hands.
Time's here for techies to start eating some humble pie.

Hopefully you're not one of those types of people, because smarmy/smug coders had their day, and now it's done.
Get on the trade train, or get left in the dust.

AI is doing the coding now.
Your current skill set is soon to be obsolete.
