Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Only 195 jobs? Ireland’s Intel plant must’ve found a unicorn, they’re practically immune while the U.S. gets gutted

Only up to 195 jobs are facing the axe at Intel’s Leixlip plant, under 5% of its roughly 5,000‑strong Irish workforce. Meanwhile, in the U.S., Intel is gearing up to cut 15–20% of its global headcount (that’s over 10,000 jobs starting mid‑July, beginning with 107 in Santa Clara) under Lip‑Bu Tan’s purge of bloated middle management. The fabs in Oregon, New Mexico, and Arizona will see thousands of layoffs. I seriously don’t understand why the Irish fab is taking such a small hit while we back home are getting hit so hard.

Irish mte earns about €80k-€85k. What does the US counterpart earn? Tax efficient country. Inside the EU. A good history of making intel money.

There's another reason which hasn't been commented on as why Intel needs the European fab. It's a consequence of Trump's tariffs allowing Intel to bypass the expected reciprocal tariffs expected from the EU and being able to sell into the EU market tariff free. I expect all US multinationals to be attempting the same which makes a joke of Trump's tariff policy.

The reason is simple, the Irish work hard, don't want to organize a strike and don't whine about RTO. LBT is very keen on the team.

@OP
FAB 34 is over 49% owned by Apollo group. This may be the reason. And the Apollo investment is booming right now.

@a3 US employees have horrible medical benefits. It's a huge chunk of the difference

@OP Those laid off in Ireland will still receive 5 to 7 weekly salaries for each year of employment + 450 euros per week unemployment benefit for 9 months. All employees are just waiting for layoffs so they can rob Intel once again. In addition, every person fired is under the personal control of an Irish minister. Naturally, under such conditions, it will be Americans who are fired, not Irish slackers.

They've got a unicorn farm adjacent to the fab.

They feed them potatoes and Guinness Stout, so the unicorns are somewhat overweight.

There was 5000 employees last October and 800 took the VSP. Ireland has the lowest total headcount of any site, Israel has 10K. India about 20K the majority in the states. The US employees are on 2/3 times more salary than an Irish employee so for Intel to make any savings it’s has to be US staff out the door

Is this what they refer to as 'the troubles'?

It doesn't seem that bad.

@a2 It was approximately 15% in October. Ireland is an EUV Fab, likely shielding them from major cuts. It will come though if LBT can't fill the Fab in the near future.

Look at how much an average Irish fab employee makes. Now compare that to the US.

If i recall Ireland had a Voluntary Retirement outs in Oct of ~40% wheres Israel had less than 1%. Intel miscaculated the Irish elligibilty and uptake. Similar Oregon was only ~10%
