Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

They know exactly what they're doing.

Don't ask "how do they expect [any function] to continue?". They don't. Verizon will look completely different very quickly and your job, if you still have one, is going to change. Whether it's a sale, merger, or complete dismantling, the old phone company is no more.

  • Small companies do tasks manually
  • Medium companies engage vendors
  • Large companies eventually have to in-source functions again because their processes are so customized to fit their needs.

We are shrinking from being a large company, to outsourcing functions again on our way back down. HCL wants Verizon to use ServiceNow so bad. ETMS is hands down the best ticketing system I've ever seen. Remedy, Metasolv, SNOW don't hold a candle in terms of customizability.

Treating a telecom company that once held a sterling reputation as a wireless carrier (and could have easily white-gloved copper customers, but chose not to) as some kind of generic corporation to commoditize and automate away is the su---r punch that brings it all crumbling down.

CWA/IBEW contracts expire in 2026. The current political environment makes this about the last best chance to recategorize the old Ma Bell utility and get out from under it, sell off the VBG which they've been gutting with regards to product, personnel, and systems resources in the last 5 yrs, and morph into a wireless/shopping/marketing/social site(think WeChat).

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the old phone company died in 1984 and yes I was around for that. Those were the days of directors having 200+ reports, company paid summer picnics, real rewards for a job well done. Ah good times...
