Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

@r8taa, Saudi Aramco is a large organization. They have an office a stone’s throw away from the Chevron Towers in downtown Houston in Two Allen Center on Smith Street.

Yeah, the original post is 3 years old, but the OP went about things the wrong way trying to find work.

OP, it’s too bad you couldn’t find a new job outside of Chevron as quickly as you estimated. Not everyone is the same. And maybe your job posting or applications were not presented well enough to the hiring company. Maybe they weren’t impressed with your qualifications or the manner you sold yourself to them. There are many variables. But posting to 500+ jobs in so little time sounds like you used a scattergun approach. Thiat approach is not good. Be selective and take the needed time to tailor your resume and cover letter to each job you post for. That approach is more effective.

Looks as though Chevron was correct in laying you off.

Maybe they just don't like YOU.

COP has lots of openings. I would send your resume quickly before the other 100,000 recently unemployed get the last security officer position. You could work your way back to an Accountant 1 in no time.

I got laid off from Chevron. Luckily, after all my years of service and socking away a huge nest egg, I don't need to work for anymore. I will still search for a job, but definitely not in the O&G sector. I'll take my time and find something I will enjoy. Perhaps I'll find a small warehouse or auto dealership office job. Drink coffee and shoot the breeze most of the day. I only wish that everyone who were my Chevron colleagues have a stressless time finding a new path in life. Don't dispair as things always work out in the end.

First of all, this is a huge downturn an between 150,000 - 200,000 oil & gas jobs have been lost with more to come. Obviously, if most companies are laying off there won't be any jobs. The few jobs that are out there are for specific skills and are usually not listed on the public career sites by the companies. The jobs that are listed there are either leftovers from better times and have not been closed by HR or they are required to list them so they can get some H-1B worker visa approved/extended or a green card processed. They need to show that they were unable to find a qualified U.S. worker.

Secondly, jobs are not found through applying to hundreds of websites. Many people make this mistake. I did the same back in 2008.

You need to use your network and talk to people. Go to industry meetings like local SPE chapter meetings and luncheons and talk to people. This is how you hear about opportunities and give your 30 second 'elevator speech' (after you have practiced it).

Often times there are local support/networking groups. I know of several in Houston that are often associated with some churches (job ministries) but you do not have to be a member to attend.

Look for some volunteer opportunities with industry groups which are a good way to expand your network.

I know for a fact that some oilfield companies are hiring, it just doesn't always happen overnight...

Wow! that's quite a list. I disagree with you though. I have had several O&G companies contact me from your list. Most people ARE laying off but there are opportunities out there. You have to: be positive, be creative, and adapt to the current market conditions. My transition is almost over and I will be laid off shortly. Luckily I already have a job lined up that pays more and offers more in terms of a career than Chevron could.

I see that you have applied at "Oxy" and "Occidental." I would suggest that you work with a recruiter/headhunter in addition to networking as opposed to blindly sending out resumes.

The best time to look for another job is when you already have a job. Follow up with your professional network, have a backup plan, and a backup of the backup plan...

Unfortunately, there are no jobs in the oil industry right now. You have two options (1) ride out the storm (2) look for work in another Industry.
