Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Mid 40s and considering options

I really don’t want to get older and find myself looking for a job as age discrimination is real. I’ve always assessed basically in the middle and see no reason for this to change other than my observation that ranking drops as one ages. When do most people see the age based ranking drops start?

#agediscrimination is a problem at this company and others. You are wise to consider impact on yourself and act accordingly. Harder to move when near or older than 50 so if you are mid 40s probably your last chance to establish yourself outside the company somewhere else

I agree with the previous post—run!! Like your life depends on it, because it does. Age discrimination is real at every company, but at EM it’s part of the cultural foundation. Once you hit 50 (and you’re not one of the chosen) your rank will drop. Could be before 50, could be after, but it will happen. On the wrong project? Toxic manager who doesn't like you, or values others in their group more? Work for a manager with lots of HiPos to support in the PA meetings? Your rank will drop. Unless you’re on the fast track, you will either suffer a miserable existence anticipating/dreading ranking every year or you’ll be PIP fodder. If a hefty salary is your prime motivation, by all means stay. If not, protect your sanity and run!

Get out now. Truth is everywhere on these posts. Had I know when I was younger I’d have never stayed this long. 50 is when they start their head games. That’s when most folks realize they are trapped and have to endure toxic managers so they end up having to go to a shrink and take dope to cope with this place. Don’t let yourself get to that point. There’s a reason why there are so many su----es. My shrink told me Exxonmobil keeps his business thriving. Now that is saying something. Glad I left and glad I’m dr-g free. Wonderful new job, no she devil and life is good again

@OP I think you should get out of O&G altogether.

Take a year or two and lay low, doing enough not to get fired but also not get noticed. Take some (free) courses and upskill to something that registers as transferable. Get a certificate. Get another. Accentuate the transferable skills on your CV when applying for jobs.

O&G functions as a good ol’ buys club and has also been a gravy train for decades. That’s why tons of REs are on here flipping out 24/7; the gravy train has derailed, and they don’t know what to do, since the only skill they have is how to talk their way through a large operating company. Don’t become one of these people.

Stay employable. Don't get stuck in a rut. Don't stop investing in yourself.

46-51 is when they whack people, rank can fall 2 or more buckets a year then NSI the following year. Then you are done.
52 starts the safe haven, but many people can't survive till then.
Once you get 52, the worst they can do is to whack you right at 55 so you leave with a discount lump sum or annuity. But still consider yourself lucky as many won't make it.
To be nsied around 50 is the worst. Seniority go down the drain and tough to find a comparable pay job

Everything said previously is 1000% accurate. You will get axed btwn 50-51,9, if u make it to 52, u r protected to 55, but you rank will go down to NI. Then u can only hope to tread water till u r whacked over 55. But dont worry, theres no age discriiination, just merely coincidence

To the post below saying 'Engineering' is safer: the board has a study going now assessing the speed at which they can literally move all of EMTEC to India.

In that light, I would say someone in their 40s will not only fight age discrimination, but a problem where most of the work has been moved away from you, and your job tasks turn to s***. You'll spend all of your time re-doing low quality, overseas work; likely working non standard hours to meet with your India team.

Seriously need to look at who you vote for and where you spend your money. Next if you’re not a super yet you need to look at heading out.

At 50 your ranking starts to drop. By 55 they want you out. You have to be extremely good at what you do and have a unique skill set to cross the 55 year mark. Of course, you can be a HiPo and none of this applies to you. You are safe for life.

They want you gone by 55, ranking starts dropping at 50, then you hang on tooth and nail until NRE. If you find something you're interested in with decent pay, just take it

Depends on your job. If it’s something that can move to India, you are counting days. Hatchman can come anytime. Example: Global Projects. I am much happier leaving to Tech companies, they need our skills everywhere. They are openly moving every role to India. You won’t last long.
If you are in engineering, you are safer
