Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Would you stay?

Honest question… with the lack of transparency and the overall poor employee relations shown by BC, are you thinking about staying long-term if you get an offer? Do you think the RSUs BC awards will make a difference, or do you expect to continue looking until you find a different job?

I know there are lots of people on both sides of the “China will block this” issue, but aside from that how do you see prospects at the company (whichever way it goes) going forward?

You are not an employee of Broadcom today, they owe you nothing.

And with the attitude that BC has shown to FUTURE employees, it sets any kind of employer/employee relationship bad from the beginning. If I was applying for a job at BC, or any other employer, and they put me through this, I’d never leave a current employer for them. This is bad form no matter how you look at it.

If any you should point fingers at VMW exec team for lack of transparency.

BC is controlling the show here, not VMW.

Depends on whether it's worth my while financially, plus whether the people I've worked with still make it a good place to be.

OP here and I’m in the “Ok with either outcome, Take severance and figure out life” category. I’ve been looking since the announcement but haven’t seen anything wildly better—so was just waiting to see what happened. However, with as screwed up as things appear to be over the last couple of months, I’m looking more seriously.

I can honestly say that working here has become intolerable after years of being great. I am very glad to have an offer elsewhere to leave this lost and unfathomably poorly-led company. I have never seen anything like this. I won’t look back other than with hopes of good luck to the many great people I have had the chance to work with. No regrets. But moving on.

As far as, would you stay is concerned, the real question is why did we stay this long, when we knew what's possible for year and half?

People that stayed here are in the following buckets according to me

  1. Ok with either outcome, Take severance and figure out life.
  2. Ready to work for Broadcom, if offered no matter how bad.
  3. Want to leave, but unable to find jobs elsewhere.
  4. other matters concerning immigrations and GC process.

Of course not! They destroyed everything.

It’s too early to say, in a lot of countries they legally can’t share a lot of details until close.

UK person here. I'll be honest, I fully expect my current comp to go down (base + commission + car allowance) due to the way BC structure their bonus plan, paid annually) as well as the suggestion by BC people on this forum that BC bonuses don't always pay out at the expected rate. So, for me, that's already a 4 figure hit after tax every month, with the possibility of making some back a year down the line. Now, it's not all about the comp, so when it comes to the job itself and the customers I work with, my expectation is that BC will rip the soul out of VMware and do it fast, I am pretty sure I won't enjoy working for BC, so I expect I will take any offer that comes but with a view to leaving within months. That way, I can see what the real deal is, continue getting paid and start looking for roles elsewhere. There's a lot of talk about the RSUs and I think it has already been said on here that for UK and Ireland the tax regime means that even that an award of 100%+ salary equivalent just isn't worthwhile. I can expect no career progression and no base pay rises and to be focussed on just a few large accounts. Having said all that, if the offer is poor then that might be the kick up the ar-e I need to just walk away, life is too short and I should be working on my health, progress and happiness. The party is over at VMware, it was a he-l of a ride.

This is the place to be. No questions. With the intelligence from the combined solutions working together, we'll be helping customers like never before. Its a small world. Even good competition would be healthy for customers.

VMW lost its innovation mojo a long time ago. I value having modern tech skills and experience -- that clearly won't happen with BC harvesting cash from the installed base. I'm out of here as soon as I can find an equal or better job. No upside to staying at AVGO.

Honestly if I get an offer I’ll try to stick around until I can’t take any longer but also plan on looking. Lots of companies offer sign in bonus and RSUs to match those RSUs. Maybe even more
