Thread regarding Synamedia layoffs

Is this really the way to run a tech company?

Engineers working on 7 year old laptops with no sign of any refresh. A mostly empty office in Staines because we can't get rid of the lease. An empty office in Chandlers Ford for the next couple of years because we can't get rid of the lease. Still no bonus for financial year 2022. Confirmed absolutely no bonus for 2023. ...and a well below inflation pay rise on the horizon (if anything at all).

If P*l Srge thinks this is the way to motivate engineers then he is living in cloud cuckoo land. I work in one of the very profitable divisions of the company and if you think this is the way to motivate me and others in my team you've got another thing coming. What is the point in setting any goals for 2024 if we are simply not rewarded for anything any more.

It would have been a nice gesture if we had still got a small bonus this year but nothing really does translate to a big f*ck off from our CEO. I think he should resign and hand the reigns over to somebody who knows what they are doing. What a complete joker - it makes me and others in my team really angry.

All I can say is best wishes and good luck. Oh, and do they do a referral bonus?

After 16 years being committed to this company through NDS, Cisco and Synamedia I’ve now had enough and written my resignation letter this weekend and will be sending it to my manager on Monday. Although it’s a gamble with no job secured in advance I can no longer be part of an organisation that lies and treats its employees with such low regard. Good luck to all my friends and colleagues.

Fresh blood is certainly what we need. Sadly they seem to be making them redundant ! The company is ‘sick’ and needs a re-start. Get rid of the bloated higher management and let some of those older staff go (with an acceptable package). Unfortunately, the owners are more inclined to run it down to its bare bones and sell off cheap.

After 20+ years, I’m hanging on for a payout. The worry is it will be statutory , when the finger finally points at me.
The company is lumbered with a bloated management structure. Group mangers with groups of less than 10, that report to more levels of management.
Many Experienced engineers that have zero drive.
The company needs an injection of thresh blood with new ideas and impetuous, if it’s to have a chance

@srl+1oWLqBb7 that’s very impressive to hang out on an ex-company layoff just to be smug.
People are at different stages in their lives and careers - some close to retirement with long tenures. Many have been holding out to see the way the company was going, and possibly waiting for the only bonus they are likely to receive - redundancy. Admittedly things look pretty bleak now.
There are also different ways to feel fulfilled in a job. Being an expert and knowing the customer is enough for some of us. We can’t all be hungry and ambitious to move around from job to job. We may be forced to now though.

seriously, why is anyone still there?

the tech su-ks, the ELT is a sham, and all the talented people left ages ago. Where's the hunger, where's the ambition?

I've been using my current laptop since January 2016. It's pushing 8 years. About a year ago, I asked for refresh and IT sent me the exact same model. I refused.

What a joke.

@OP+1oWLqBb7 The FY22 bonus was either announced in full knowledge it couldn't be paid (sui-idal leadership), or more likely, announced in "good faith" after which it was discovered the company was incapable of paying it (scandalously incompetent leadership).

The FY22 bonus should never have been awarded in the first place. The company couldn't pay the bonus when it was announced. 12 months later it still can't.

Anyone who thought any FY23 bonus would be paid, with FY22 outstanding, was deluded. The leadership might be incompetent, but they're not stupid. They weren't going to make the same mistake twice. If there was cash to pay out FY23, that cash could have gone to FY22 instead. The reality is, there isn't the cash for either! Sensibly they announced no FY23 bonus.

Don't expect any FY24 bonus either. I doubt FY22 will have been paid fully by then either.

Pay rises...The company doesn't have the cash to pay FY22 bonus, why would it have the cash to give decent pay rises.

Laptops...The company doesn't have the cash to buy new equipment en masse. Presumably you'd get a replacement if yours suffered a "fatal malfunction" though?

Leases...The company can't magic away lease commitments. Better to leave empty and save some cash by not heating etc. until either a new tenant is found or lease expires.

Goals...Agree, a total waste of time.

Motivation...Ultimately you and your team need to leave the company. Easier said than done, for lots of reasons, but you'll be better of (financially and mentally) somewhere else.
