Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Six months in and already out the door

Started here not even half a year ago. Put in the work, learned the systems, made an effort. Now I'm being kicked out with people who've been here for years. What was even the point of hiring me?

@a5 Another tech company in the Triangle did the same thing. I managed Capital and Expense budgets. An early 20-something Executive PM was put in the office. Asked what organization and her job. She said she was just hired into my division and I knew we weren't hiring. The project she was on never existed. I just smiled and said welcome. I wrote a note and put it in an envelope. Told her we will see if I ever need to open it. Sure enough, 4 weeks later we had a large layoff. They hired in 200 early 20-somethings, all on the same project that never existed and had no funding, laid them off with a large number to bring the average age down to 40 years old. I even ran the numbers removing them. Because they did not have any years of service, there was no severance. The young lady was crying and hysterical. I asked her what she thought her qualifications were to be an Executive PM and she said none. I asked why she thought she would get such a position. Believe me, the people that got laid off sent the information in to different agencies. It didn't matter because it is legal for companies to hire people just to lay them off.

Classic LIFO selection by an unexperienced manager. Sorry you had to experience this, it's just plain stoopid.

I'm sorry you were impacted without attaining any tenure.

It’s easy to think you are at fault somehow. Most likely you are not and there wasn’t anything you could have done to change that destiny. When I was at Cisco, there were some groups with absurdly poor performers but in a very prized and visible organization and they never got touched but even super high performers in less strategic groups were shown the door. Other times it was politics - not necessarily at the personal level but at a VP/Director level, and one group “won”.

"Sorry to hear you were impacted. That’s how Cisco rolls. Performance doesn’t mean anything at Cisco"

When I was laid off at Lenovo, I had beat my sales quota and even made President's Club. Supposedly, I was laid off because the Account Manager that I was tied to did not live in the same state as some of our big customers, so they laid him off and there was no one left for me to work with.

I've also seen people laid off simply because they weren't among the favorites.

You came in at market value and likely TC was more than your peers so they selected you and there wasn’t anyone to advocate on seeing your potential. Their loss.

My guess is you’re young. Six months isn’t even enough to gauge somebody’s performance so that other poster here can kick rocks. I was laid off in 2015, when Chuck took over from John. And what happens is, most of the people getting laid off are 50 plus. And to avoid getting sued, they lay off a few young people to keep the average down. They gave us a spreadsheet with the years of my group getting laid off and it was quite obvious: 52-58-53-25-62-48-56-25 etc. Good luck to you.
