Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Over 50 you got the call yesterday or today.

Seems that employees over 50 were the largest group impacted today. Experience means nothing, loyalty means nothing, dedication means nothing. With age comes experience and sadly with longevity comes a higher expense.

What is needed is a class action suit against the company for age discrimination.

I was part of a huge layoff with another telecom. I got the rundown of age and I think either state or job level....maybe both.
In any case, it definitely was weighted towards the older personnel but with just enough in their 20s & 30s to provide a legal cover.
No doubt these days AI can optimize the mix.

@am there is always that one person that has to make everything political. I got news for you. Verizon has always had the power to do what they want with their employees unless the employees are part of a collective bargaining agreement. It's called at-will employment and exists in most (but not all) states. Has nothing to do with any administration.

@OP yea, good luck with that. Vz makes sure there is no basis for discrimination lawsuits when they select those impacted. That's what their high-priced lawyers are paid for.

Anyone over the age of 40 should have gotten an OWBPA report with their severance package. This details, by role and age for each business case (department), the counts of those impacted and the counts of those non-impacted. I'd advise you to look at it before claiming most of those laid off were over 50.

@a3 We have a narcissist in the Whitehouse who protects Corporations, CEOs and the 1%. Verizon isn’t afraid of the threat of a class action lawsuit, their plan is to layoff more ppl. in Oct/Nov. ‘26. This new administration has given Corporations the power to do whatever they want to the employees. The major Corp. tax break didn’t soften them up either. Most ppl. have wised up but some are still in denial about the con that is being played on the American working class. American Corps. will continue to make the workforce leaner. This is just a small taste of what’s to come as we standby and watch America & Israel “Make Asia Great Again”

@a3 Class action lawsuits are primarily brought by private individuals or entities (plaintiffs) acting as representatives for a larger group, rather than by the state or federal government directly.

@a2 Incorrect. If Verizon breaks a law it is not the individual suing them but rather the state / federal government via a state or federal prosecutor. If this is proven to be an age discrimination case the severance agreement might as well have never existed. It might prevent an individual from suing Verizon but if a group of individuals notify their state or federal prosecutors, Verizon can do nothing. A severance agreement does not indemnify from breaking state or federal labor laws.

You had agree not to sue as a individual or as a class in order to receive your severance. If you don't need the money don't sign and hire a lawyer. The company uses severance as their legal shield.
