That's the only strategy we need. And yes, fire everyone at the top, replace them with a bot that will help people build better and sell more laptops.
That's it, a McKinsey masterpiece in two sentences.
You can thank me later.

@eb Yes it was a high margin gem 10 years ago when Dell bought EMC. But then Dell leadership proceeded to do their best to turn EMC into Dell instead of the other way around. In the process Dell leadership ruined VMware (a product that was practically printing money before Dell took over) to the point MD was forced to sell it. Now instead of continuing to improve and innovate upon EMCs products Dell has allowed them to stagnate.
@eb the high value gem was eroded when EMC management was gradually replaced with Dell sycophants following rigid playbooks and reporting to a clueless hierarchy. They eliminated any danger of innovation.
@fk The only company that innovates laptop and desktops is Apple. And notice how many of our high end laptops resemble Mac Books from several years back? Also Apple innovates with a the recyclability of 90% of those machines.
For those who hate the Mac OS or Linux, most Macs can also easily run Windows. Go to your local used electronic store today. You can get something pretty powerful for a few hundred. This is of course about the Intel based Macs. I don’t know if the M series will run Windows without additional help.
@a6 EMC did quite well in developing good products and a good reputation for support.
The last major product I worked on was PowerStore. All Dell did to that was push aside experienced legacy EMC project managers, add two more layers of bureaucracy, and fire the experienced technologists that were leading this to a truly innovative product. Arbitrary deadlines, having to wait for signoffs from people who didn’t know the product, and the added burden of having to transform to new systems during the roll out and initial support phase -all contributed to delays in delivery and timely support. Yes, please sell off the Storage and AI divisions and watch them flourish.
@h3 I think it could potentially save tech companies money in the long run. In my support role we often have customers in EMEA and APJ insist on working with AMER support, even if that means joining a call at 2 AM their time. Outsourcing to India just pi---s off otherwise loyal customers abd drives them away. Not tonmention the fact that the AMER team tends to fix customer problems in one call instead of letting the problem linger for weeks/months.
If Trump wants to get more US people at work, he should prevent the move of the work to India. Its so easy but I think it will cost too much for all these Tech-companies
Let's be honest, even at their peak Dell desktops and laptops were overpriced underperfomers.
They bought EMC for high margin storage. I am always wondering, is it the high value gem that they thought it would be? Maybe 10 years ago, but there is so much competition that 10 years may as well be 50 years.
HP destroyed their market value and growth by spinning off client and enterprise into separate companies. Dell made the correct choice to keep it all under one roof.
Dell never stopped being a laptop company. Post all the acquisitions including EMC, they had to squeeze the product into something that can be comodotised so the back end system was able to SKU it and use inside sales for everything. Only the industry requirements of Power max stopped that. This new Dell is too little too late.
@d7 We don't innovate because we have sh-t for leadership and sh-t for talent. Anybody with talent is long gone.
@a8 We haven't innovate because dell management drove out and or fired all the people with the talent for innovating.
Let's SELL Jeff Clarke's -one size to small- T-Shirts with every laptop. That should incentivize the sales of other hardware.
LOL. develop Laptop is just like to develop a TV. No Skill No hope.
@a6 my sentiments exactly! I deal with this from the support side and we constantly get dumped on and then next thing you know India takes over and they ghost us.
@OP What do we have to sell that's worth anything? What do we have that anybody wants to buy?
Engineering has fu-ked up everything they've touched. EMC assets aren't worth much as engineering hasn't innovated anything in over a decade. And we already sh-t all over VMware.
I have a feeling that is coming, is EMC storage doing anything? Seems like a new product pops up and its hot and heavy for a month and then the projects dead end and the workload gets pushed to India and you never hear about it again.
