Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

There is no NRE protection anymore.

i will try to be brief. I was dpced last year in nov and then told I failed the dpc and now was on a pip. The pip was very similar with a few things added. I failed dpc in dec and failed pip in feb 2026. I was 53 years old with 17 years in. I was constantly asked to leave on my own and take the pil during the dpc and pip. I was told in the beginning that exxon was trying to help me to get to retirement age. I complained to hr and of course got no help from them. If I knew i was doomed I would not have tried as hard as I did and just left. Everything I did was not good enough according to the supervisor. I was told it was not the work but that I was not a good fit for exxon anymore. I left with no medical and lump sum payout. I am getting unemployment right now and pondering on whether to retire or keep working. There are no guarantees any more so treat exxon like a year to year contract job. I would not have stayed as long and suffered if I knew this outcome. Give exxon the loyalty they give their employees none. There was another who was fired during their dpc and was nre as well. Anyway I hope this helps those in their 50's decide and I am done with exxon.

Bottom line - XOM has to go after the 52-55 NRE's (near retirement eligible) in 2026 since we have been PIP'ing/NSI'ing at 8% per year since 2020. After 5 years, you have to discontinue the protected class of 52-55 in order to save another $5 billion in OPEX by then end of 2030.

Most 15+ year employees are just hoping to make it to 55 years old in order to be eligible for XOM health career benefits as a retiree.

So, let me get this right. You were put on a DPC, you didn't pass it and they put you on a PIP right after the DPC. Did I get it right? It sounds weird. Anyway, here's my question. Did they offer you a PIL after failing the DPC? Please, tell us more about the unemployment benefits you got. You didn't sign any of the papers they gave you. You just walked out and they fired you for performance. What benefits did you get? Also, how difficult was to get the lump sum?

DPC is documented performance counseling. I was placed on DPC first as the NRE status states. After I failed the DPC they added more impossible s heet to my PIP. I was told exxon was trying to help me get to retirement but in reality they were trying to get me to quit. During my PIP the supervisor became even more aggressive and belittling. I was constantly asked if I wanted to stay or take the PIL because there was no way I was going to pass. I stayed until the end and when I was pressed to sign the pip separation I refused and walked out. The supervisor and manager screamed at me to sign and if I did not I would be terminated for insubordination. I told them to shove the pip up their arses. I was called constantly for a few days and the supervisor left a couple of nice massages asked me to please call. I did not and after a few weeks I received a certified letter from exxon. I initially refused to pick up the letter but eventually signed for it at the post office. The letter stated I was terminated at a specific date and it was for performance. I was able to file for unemployment because I was fired for performance. Exxon did not challenge or dispute my unemployment claim. So instead of 3 months pil I got a year of unemployment pay. Don't sign anything and make the fire you. Do not quit and make the fire you. If you are 50 or older take your lump sum and 401k and move them into an IRA. You will pay no taxes on this transfer.

DPC in Nov does not happen in Nov, DPC is 3 months bot 6 weeks and PIP straight after a DPC does not happen either. Lots of people with real issues, dont post Fictional nonsense.

If you were put on a dpc that means you su-k even more than the normal pip fodder. Sounds like they made the right choice. Y’all keep whining about how you can’t make it to 55 anymore and yet I know plenty 55+ folks who are thriving and nowhere near NSI. It’s almost like they provide value to the company instead of whining on anonymous websites 🤷

@d2 what was the reason?

I at least got some of my lump sum. After 50 you are eligible. I really feel bad for those under 50 say 47 who are targeted and piped or fired. There were some who spent 12 to 17 years at exxon and got nothing. I knew one who was fired at 48 with 18 years in. i did not deserve the treatment at exxon. Other employees who are protected committed some of the most dangerous unsafe actions that were incidents. These special employees are still at exxon and some were promoted for their incompetence. One such incident occurred at the Friendswood site and the offending employee is still employed by exxon. Lets just say it was a blast as if exxon wanted to get into the howitzer business or gas chamber business.

@OP I think it just depends on where you are working and how connected you are. I have seen the company bend over and take it for a few guys that are mid 50’s in Carlsbad recently. They gave both made up salary positions as rotators instead of either one of them quitting. I feel like it would have been more beneficial for the company to let them walk since they will both retire in the next few years.
I guess the old saying, it’s not what you but who you blow, is still true. On the bright side that means you aren’t a kiss a** since they let you go.

Someone at the top has decided that age discrimination lawsuits are a toothless boogie man. Bring on the lawsuits and show them otherwise. If nobody sues, they win.

I told you guys months ago on this board that this was coming and I got a million downvotes. I tried to warn you. I’m sorry - you shouldn’t have to be subjected to this. The company no longer values its employees no matter what they tell you.

If you signed the papers saying all Litigation would be handled in Texas courts (even if you live in Billings), you're gonna lose the case.
There are no ethics at the sign with the double-cross.

Sadly once you are in your 40+ age band the chance of being pip fodder greatly increases. 20 years with the company with glowing feedback and then it is like a switch is flipped and suddenly nothing is good enough.

Get a lawyer immediately. NRE has always been a policy to avoid lawsuits, so if they are no longer honoring it, bring on the lawsuits and teach them a lesson.
