I thought Mr. Smith was going to wait for the masacre on Valentine’s Day or the satanic Friday 13. If he does it on Friday the 13, at least we know what cult runs Omaha.

Word is that mechanical is getting cut again. Labor union is taking the machinists and electricians service and outbound jobs for less pay.

Union Pacific Railroad had approximately 32,439 employees as of the end of 2024, representing a 1.62% decline from the 2023 workforce.

In 2025, Vena reduced the headcount to 31,466, representing a 3% decline.

Let’s see what 2026 will bring.

They ll just continue with their BS Critical Rules Violations and continue to fire/dismiss some employees. That’s how these a**Holes get away with this cut in manpower.
I believe in karma, and these SOBs sure are past due for it!!!

I was told the Lathrop Intermodel will do cuts. Not enough traffic. Possible close the whole facility.

It's quite breathtaking how full of sh!t vena is! I see he made no mention of the uptick in derailments. I see he made no mention of any merger progress. Every time he opens his mouth, he doesn't hesitate to mention of the continued reduction of employees though. I hope this merger fails on him so badly because that will cost the company very dearly and he probably won't have a job anymore. He is the biggest BS artist in the industry. I think he's completely incapable of being honest at all!

This was reported by the UP CEO on the 4th quarter 2025 report that came out this week.

“We remain disciplined, setting the best ever full-year record for workforce productivity as we utilized 3% fewer employees to move 1% more volume,”

More on the 4th quarter:

Fourth-quarter volume declined 4% due to a 10% drop in premium traffic, which includes intermodal and automotive business.

Most of the intermodal decline was due to a 30% drop in international volume, which came down from record levels in 2024.

So there it is, expect the worse: 6% to 15% cut for this year. Less freight volume means less workers. Last year we had 3% less employees in a flat year. So this year it will be more for sure.

@OP of course they will sever more non execs. Thats his PROcess and canadian math. Keep the leadership and excessively high paid jobs and get rid of those who do the work and make far less. Makes no cents....

If January cuts do not happen then you have a 1/2 probability that it will happen later on in the year. UP employees are classified as temporary or buffer workers in Precision Scheduled Railroading. Doing more work with less people also known as exploitation. This exploitation is part of the monopoly merger.
