First to Report to Manager Wins !!!

Often times a FLS or SLS LOVE and i mean absolutely LOVE when they hear about something (lets say a safety incident or Process leak or urgent project matter) for this example lets say the incident happens at 9AM.

And then at 9:05 AM (5 mins later) when they are talking to their direct report and the direct report says yup i heard about it and i know all the details and oh while i was at it here is the final report.

Yup su-ks to be me cuz i was scolded by my manager and his manager for not doing my job, because i hadnt known (wasnt in the know) that an incident had occurred 16 mins ago, yup you heard that right 16 fkn minutes ago. Do these people ever stop and think, hmmmm maybe im a manager and people report to me so if Team A has an incident they report to me first so it isnt practical for me to think that a person from Team B would know this information at the same time as me ?????? Stupid fkrs.

@da, sarcasm is almost impossible to get across in posts, but I’m a fan! Thanks for the laughs.

This must be a downstream thing. in upstream the motto is still ki-l the messenger. you want to be one step removed from noticing or perceived responsibility to notice.

@da People think that having a ‘boss’ title makes them immune from pain. If you don’t have the guts to say it in person without fear, then don’t say it in an Internet forum…

Years ago I worked in BMT as an individual contributor in the field a lot. Our DH explained to me how knowledge is power within the LT, and first manager to know about an incident or a start-up or whatever would basically “win” as the most knowledgeable and “plugged in” in front of the LT. He would ask me to text him real time updates of things in the field so he could win their silly power struggle games.

Hmmm. It’s almost as if the reality of the incident somehow depends on the manager’s acknowledgement of its existence. As if the information is being controlled at each level. How convenient for those controlling the information that they will always bring a solution before the problem is acknowledged into existence.

Learn how to play the game. Years ago, I effectively ended my career at BTRF by being an honest broker with information.

I know what incident this is and this is an inappropriate platform to air these matters. Please come see me toward end of shift Tuesday so we can discuss.

I know what you're trying to say and yes, this happened to me a lot when I was there. Especially regarding incidents, etc. I've gotten chewed out for not knowing about something in a 'timely' manner despite my several attempts to tell our 'stakeholders' to notify me about 'X,Y,Z'.. as much as I give them my phone number, send them emails, update notification procedures, contact lists, ect. They still notify who they want, and if you're not the favorite, the hipo, or the person with the right 'history', then you're F'd. A good manager would talk to the notifying party and drill them on who they need to call. A XOM SLS/manager would blame you for 'not advocating enough', 'not being visible', or 'not effectively making your business case'. And yes, this was used against me, even if it was the other people technically not doing their job properly.. Good luck is all I can say.
