Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Car Department

Anyone know why Carmen are being trained to do mechanical outbounds, air brake departure test, and more? The only thing I can think of is that they are going to work on both cars and locomotives service and outbound departure test at their locations. Are other locations doing this al ready, if so. How is it working out?

It sounds like Union Pacific is cross-training Carmen to handle both mechanical outbounds and air-brake departure tests, likely to improve efficiency and flexibility across various locations. Some yards have been doing similar programs with mixed results depending on workload and staffing. Meanwhile, for local transportation needs during shifts or training, services like Metro West Car Service can help ensure reliable travel.

@213 Pocatello carmen have been doing locomotive repairs since there is only 1 road machinist and 1 road electrician left after the latest round of furloughs last year. Carmen have been training to service and fuel mainline trains to help out when needed as well.

Train crew do 99% of locomotive hostling in both mechanical service facilities there because the 2 MSOs per shift are too busy working mainline trains, working originating power, servicing local/RCL units, fixing locomotive problems out in the yard, along with spending a ridiculous amount of time on the computer updating endless forms and sheets, power planning with the depot, monitoring who knows how many other emails/messages/etc. And don't forget about doing facility maintenance, ordering their own supplies, etc. It's neverending.

@we Unions have been failing for over 12 years. They need to bring more job security to the table. The only time you hear from them is when your in trouble and they want you to sign a waiver. F no, you go to investigation every time... Clerical error's etc, so many things can go wrong. Arbitration thinks our firing process is a joke.

@OP in Houston they already combined the car department and round house management jobs. One person over bought departments Seems silly they only know one craft 🤷‍♂️. These jokers are just doing sh-t at this point. It’s very counterproductive

@e2 yeah they won't have conductors after 2029ish, maybe before, one man crews will happen soon. These trains run themselves pretty much. The railroads want a ROI on PTC.

All railroads want a super worker in each area….. mechanical worker, track worker, signal worker, transportation worker… etc

Then why do they need a conductor?

You must be new. UP has done this a million times over the years. Miller yard in Dallas for one, but not recently.

Because Carmen will be absorbed into a locomotive craft.

It’s probably smart that they are opening up their scope of work because they were phasing them out.
