Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Will the company get bought out? Saw this posted on LinkedIn by a financial advisor

This has all of the signs of getting primed to find a buyer. Shed thousands upon thousands of highly compensated employees with 20+ years of tenure. No rhyme or reason to the ones chosen other than they are too costly to the bottom line. Not looking at the individual persons to see what value they bring to the organization; just treating them as nothing more than a line item on a spreadsheet. Welcome to the new Corporate America. Shareholders are the most important people; no longer the customer (internal or external).
Remember when they used to say "our employees are our greatest asset." Well, they don't say that anymore. They finally realized people are not assets, because they don't own them. People are free to take their talents elsewhere. You also don't layoff assets. People should never be treated like tangible objects.
After the 13K depart, try and make sense of a wounded and abandoned organization that's left with huge holes. Good luck to the ones that are left behind to clean up the mess. Try and pick up the pieces and keep your head above water until you can find the right buyer.
Your largest expense is employee payroll. Shed as much as you possibly can to attract the right buyer.

Who wouldn’t want to buy such a great workforce? People that can’t follow basic instructions, have to be reminded a million times to fill out the pulse survey, only show up for volunteering pictures, and complain endlessly about RTO when not taking constant time off for appointments. And they know they can get away with it because leadership is too scrambled in endless reorgs to notice the large amount of people doing literally nothing. What a deal!

Or any filthy rich individual is d-mb enough to purchase such a debt bloated, unionized workforce with pensions warranties, no real biz model, and more leaders than front line entity....and very deep in the waters competing....if anything they'd spin off some divisions, keep cleaning the sheets and try to survive....maybe a merger once is lean enough....

@ag In order for this business model to work, VZ would have to become very efficient at being a network operator. Anything is possible in theory but in practice past performance indicates this is unlikely. Employees are steeped in the company’s culture of outspending the competition in order to have a better network. T-Mobile is much more efficient with their capital spend. In my opinion T-Mobile should increase their spend but do so efficiently in order to keep their momentum going. They’re in the big leagues now.

The dividend makes VZ more of a target than anyone dare admit. Musk, Microsoft, Alphabet or Amazon. One of those four will take the leap.

I think a possible play is to strip it down to just being a network operator and wholesale it to MVNOs etc. Make them carry the cost of all the overhead, e.g. distribution, customer maintenance, devices, promos etc.

There are a lot of analysts, consultants, and advisors that are posting their thoughts about the US cellular industry in general or about Verizon specifically. Their analyses are well written and seem clever at first blush but they are mostly wrong. They think they know how the sausage is made and what makes a good sausage but in reality they don’t.

The devil is in the details and no one can predict what’s going to happen with any certainty. Verizon is still very profitable and it’s positioned with the Frontier acquisition to bundle home and mobile in more markets. If priced right, they will be able to better compete with Charter, Comcast, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

Charter and Comcast combined have 20 million mobile subscribers and growing. They are all currently on the Verizon network but they recently signed a similar MVNO deal with T-Mobile.

Long story short, I think it’s unlikely that Verizon will be acquired. It’s much more likely that they will continue along the same path of cost cutting and trying to regain market share in order to be as profitable as in the past.
