I left EM a few years ago when, right on the cusp of a promotion, I was inexplicably dropped multiple ranking categories with zero reasons given. I had a new manager that rank cycle who REALLY disliked me, probably because I frequently brought them airtight, data-backed evidence that “the way we’d always done things” in my group was terrible for the bottom line. My manager didn’t want to go upline to get approvals to try something different, so I was seen as a thorn in their side, and while they couldn’t manage to drop me all the way to NSI and PIP me out, I’m sure they tried.
Anyway - I took my time looking for the right exit and found one at about a 30% raise over my final EM salary. About three years later, I’ve been promoted twice and I’ve now about 2.5xd my final EM salary. I work for a true meritocracy that makes decisions based on data and logic instead of precedent or politics. I love my new job, and my progression points to the feeling being mutual.
If you got totally sc--wed this rank cycle, don’t lose hope. Whatever it is that EM doesn’t like about you just might be your greatest strength. Wield it in your job search and find a new employer who sees it for the gift that it is.
