One of our fearless leader JC thought it would be a great idea to pause all actual work and have the whole building do a full inventory audit of all the equipment we have in the building by next week.

They're lab auditing the whole company to find where everything is to consolidate everything to the lab as a service. They want to reduce the electric bill.
I heard this audit is not over and we still have more phases.
durham got constant issues with power and network :/
plus utilization checks are thing for few months now.
JC should be chopped for wasting labops time.
got to know what you have and the model and year to design the replacement in a lowest cost center probably not where you are ... its been a plan for remote lab engagement. I would expect a few labs across the major market time zones with full inter connectivity to manage the traffic.
So the reason for the audit is ISG overall asking over 100 million budget for new equipment and JC wants to know what we currently have and utilization.
Tell that to the asset team, We found so many assets haven't been audited in years!
@a7 To sell off the assets and fire the people. Research Triangle is expensive, and will be shut down.
I heard today that the 100% audit is across multiple sites not just NC.
@OP Definitely closing all of RTP soon. Good luck finding work to all!
@jq You are describing the RTP campus, not Durham campus. Both campuses are located in Durham. Durham (DCoE/DTC) never had a cafeteria.
@jb I used to eat in the cafeteria. Big salad bar and two fresh hot soups plus entrees. Breakfast. Actual coffee. Unsubsidized but convenient.
@j5 The surveyors could have been there prior to the construction company that has been on-site for the past month. No idea what they are doing workwise. No communications.
@j6 Durham never had a cafeteria and the labs are 85% filled. The gym was shut down during the pandemic and never reopened just like most, if not all, in the company. The power for AI is needed though. If I had to guess the audit is to see what old/unused gear can be decommissioned to make space/power available for the AI gear to buy time before spending massive amounts of money to expand the labs into the vacant space and pay for more power to be run.
Most of the labs are already empty. And the building needs a power upgrade to handle the AI power hogs. Cafeteria and gym both remain closed
There were surveyors at the Durham site this spring for a week.
The mo--n thinks that by counting the infrastructure you’ll know what’s there.
They are closing the site by year end
Nobody wants to use Dell IT. They’re the most self-serving group in all of Dell. JC thinks it’s still 1990 and doesn’t understand, not only how stupid that request is but how irrelevant he is. JC. You need to leave.
Smells like a precursor to closing the site.
Amen. Sh-t down all the damn labs and tell “the business” to stop starving IT for their shadow IT projects that never go anywhere.
Well, if you were following basic ISO standards, it should be readily available and maintained on a regular basis. Sounds like someone didn't do their job.
What is the significance of the ask? What does it do?
Same in metro-w. Call came from managers around 9am today. All hands on deck. OT approved the first time in a while for those who can take advantage of it. Deadline week after the 4th. Similar ask happened last year. And the team that was asked to get it done. Got the Axe the Monday after the deadline.
Well, at least this is news! To what end would he be doing this?
