Optimal store format

I genuinely think that the ideal store size for Macy’s in the future is a mix of larger and small stores! As a shopper, I would want to go to places that have the best selection. The smaller stores in the strip malls are a good strategy on paper, but at the same time, I think that there needs to be more sale space.

I was just thinking about this myself.

What Macy’s should implement are the following.
Replace Backstage and Last Act in their current locations with dining options or a Starbucks OR expand the current offerings of designer labels. We have too many stores carrying brands that no one wants, by freeing up this extra space, you can begin to offer new brands and fan favorite brands and double down on that versus doubling down on cr-p no one wants (that Macy’s tends to do well about for some odd reason).

Now, for Backstage, create a whole separate branding for that and place those stores in strip centers and size them to about 50k sq ft.
Also I would send all the clearance from all the Macy’s stores to this Backstage format as well. This way, you can still make profit on previous season merchandise and overstock, in addition to having a “treasure hunt” variety with your “off-price” merchandise.

@OP agreed. However, it seems that the MSF (Macys Small Format) doors should be Backstage stores. Get that junk out of the full line department stores. Macys really d-mbed down the appearance and “quality” of their stores by adding Backstage into them.
