I understand we'll have layoffs and I understand it will be major, but 12k? That's too many. I don't think Meta can get rid of so many people and still continue to function as is. My best guess, considering the little real information we have so far, is it will be anywhere between 2k and 5k.

Do you buy into the 12K rumors now?? (after the earnings announcement). 12K sounds light at this point.

OP: yes 12k seems unrealistic. Should be 24k...
Realistically Meta does not need more than 40k employee count. 20-30k should be let go..
Reconstruction and focusing on the key business is unavoidable. You can not keep hiring 80k staff and making the universe without tangible goals. Keep the blue page running does not even need 20k staff.
