Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

Nervous...

I'm so nervous about getting laid off. My boss gave me a partial achieved even though I had good feedback from my peers and business partners. I just heard a rumor last week that it means I won't get bonus and will probably get notified in March. Can anyone give me advice?

I'm not in any way defending this bizarre, half-baked rating system the management geniuses who lead TR have concocted. I'm just saying maybe OP doesn't need to be so nervous.

You got a bonus but I doubt you got the entirety of what you would have gotten if you had been given an achieved instead of partially achieved so they are still stealing from you.

I got a partially achieved and still got a bonus. So maybe the rumor was just that.

You are prime for layoff that is what they did to me a year ago so I’d quit. What do you know I quit and my whole department was let go 2 months later.

It seems that the cruelty is the point of the stack ranking.

They never didn't use stack ranking. I've been here almost ten years and there has always been a bell curve distribution independent of actual performance on my team. Someone always got the partially achieved even if their performance was commendable. Sometimes the manager would base it on a singular incident, so if everyone got their work done and got achieveds, well the manager HAS to give somebody the partially achieved, so they listen for who's being complained or gossipped about the most by toxic teammates, or who took an inconvenient sick day or time off and then they give them the partial. And since the manager doesn't want to risk pi----g off a more senior member of the team who they might be friends with or who has institutional knowledge they needed to retain, they go after the least popular or less experienced team members without consideration. Every. Time. It's never been different and this isn't new. So don't take it personally that you got a partially achieveds. It isn't fair and it was never meant to be, it's designed to burn you out so you quit or they get to fire you (you only get severance if you're laid off, partials are used to justify termination). The way to come back from a partial is to basically work unpaid overtime all year and become an absolute slave for them (that's how I came back from mine), but if you options it isn't even worth it because of how badly they underpay their employees.

Don't feel nervous, feel prepared. Layoffs are a part of corporate culture. If it happens, you will get a severance, and there are plenty of jobs out there that pay much better.

@1yzb+1fvbtQhx The ranking system has been there. Managers are pressured to spread ratings over a bell curve. Not every manager has made it obvious that the individual rating scale has changed. So if you were accustomed to getting an achieved, and 100% of your bonus, that has changed for most depts. As your manager how you're being rated.

I don't understand. We as a company exceeding our targets. Why would we not get 100% of our bonus regardless of our status?

Did they announce this ranking system?

We were always told fully achieving was a good thing. That you needed to walk on water in order to get an excess. Now, it isn't good enough to do your job?

@OP+1fvbtQhx - I hate to tell you this. But what I've been told is that partial achieved won't get the bonus. Those with achieved get 50% of their target. Exceeds is 75%.

Now that they're using stacked ranking, it's all about where your manager decides to put you on the bell curve. It has nothing to do with your performance. Plan on leaving.

@OP there is only one piece of advice to be given. If you no longer like it here, or if you feel like your worth is undervalued and you're afraid for your job all the time... find another job. Period. While you have this one. It's SO much easier to find one while you're still working... and not nearly as much pressure.

As soon as those bonus checks are in the bank this company will really be feeling the great resignation. I think it is sad that over and over again we see and hear that people working at this company are afraid of losing their jobs. Even though I have been around for years and hold a lot of institution knowledge I too wonder when my number will come up. I would be willing to bet that the company will try to salvage as many employees as they can once the resignations begin to flow in. They already have too many open positions and not enough candidates to fill them around the world. Firing those that remain behind probably won't happen this year. And they might even hire the people to do the work outside of the US this time before they fire the US staff.
