Dealing with a difficult manager?

I have a friend who has a great manager so his experience working here is completely different than mine with a bad manager. I would not like to gossip about him much, suffice it to say that he is absolutely irrational and makes work difficult in many ways. I started to envy anyone who has a better manager...

They already fired almost all good managers in SD and SJC, that means most likely.... and one funny fact is going on in SD, my coworker told me his manager said, if you don’t quit, you will keep getting 1 in your review

@OP: Is you manager XMa in the PMIC group?

From my experience: You can't change the way he/she looks at you. It does not really matter how hard you try, all of your future reviews will look almost exactly the same as your past ones. The only way to change your performance rating is to change your manager.

I agree that a bad manager can wreck your career at Qualcomm. I realized I was stuck regardless.

Incompetent managers will block any growth movement as a CYA instinct. The root of the career impact starts with being trapped in a large organization. This limits your appeal to smaller companies (where you will have to do the fun stuff and the boring stuff yourself. No one will be around to back you up.)

Either you stay and propagate the management lie or you go elsewhere and leave him hanging.

I suspect too many people tried to move to groups that allowed “rest and vest” or to “get the gang back together.” There has to be a reason why this self-defeating position freeze persists.

You have to take this seriously. Think for a second.... if you have a bad manager and he has been at Qualcomm for over 5 years... everyone knows he is bad and no one has done anything about it... this means he has friends in high places.... so if you piss him off.. your career can be negatively impacted (most likely will be)..... I would smile a lot and let him know how great he is and how wonderful an example he gives and try to transfer ..... making waves 🌊 at Qualcomm is a career killer no matter how horrible a situation you are in

I think you know this already. But, the only time Qualcomm notices this situation is after critical people leave. Does your manager understand what your job entails? Probably not.

The only thing that changed at Q since the 90’s is your employee number isn’t on your badge.

Your manager has seniority and friends in high places. If it helps, this reflects poorly on your director who promoted this person.

You know what you have to do.
