Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

Why are people not waiting for severance?

Why are people leaving when they could wait for severance? I've been looking around and sending out my resume just to get a feel for how things are right now, but I have no plans of leaving until they kick me out with a nice package. I have zero incentive to do them any favors.

@tcdj, at one time I was like you. Then I learned how to be lazy and just let the others do the work for me. It's just not worth putting forth the effort to work hard. It is much easier to join the ranks of the lazy and let the others do the hard things. I've been in this type of position now for 3 years and while I could go to another company, I would then have to work. Even though I would definitely make more money, it's worth the difference to just surf the web, toss the ball over the fence and let someone else worry with it.

If I had another opportunity, I’d take it in a heartbeat. I’m tired of busting my bu-t while colleagues are lazy and non-responsive. I’m miserable at TD because of no work/life balance but so far haven’t had any success with interviews.

severance pay is just total of years worked with TD * Base pay. So basically if you served TD 2 years, your severance pay is just equal to 2 mos. These days, at a minimum, you can get a job after 2–3 mos. see? Severance pay is not really that big.

you said, "I've been looking around and sending out my resume", just wondering how are things with regards to looking around? :) No need to answer though, I already know it.

The severance package isn't worth it.

So how big will the layoff be?

The toll my job at Teradata has taken on my mental health and my family wouldn't be worth a year or even 2 years of severance. Why continue with this stress while I wait for our aimless leaders to prepare for my exit at a time unbeknownst to me when I can leave them high and dry for an opportunity that has me waking up excited and happy to be alive every day?

I've this scenario play out at another company. Sometimes, when the right opportunity lands in your lap, it can far outweigh any severance deal you might hope to receive.
An offer in hand often beats something that isn't really a guaranteed thing

Everyone has their own reasons, I guess. Sometimes you're just tired of the stress or BS and ready to move on with life.
