In case Mary, Mark or Paul are reading this, I want them to know that I'm dialing it in super hard right now.
I'm typing this on a non-work phone while I'm supposed to be working from home.
My Friday and Monday occupation is housekeeper, Netflix watcher and errand runner.
Tuesday-Thursday, I will arrive at 9:00am, take a 2 hour lunch and leave around 1:00.
I will be listening to audible throughout the days but will setup teams to show I'm busy.
I will sit away from my group so no one sees me coming and going. I'll make sure to stop by my manager's desk to make sure she sees me.

I will continue to do this every day, as a cave person who can't be trusted. Can you please tell me how to feel, how to behave and what I should believe in again? I take PRIDE in collecting 150k while doing almost nothing for you. Being a cave person has it's rewards. Speaking of which, please sell record amounts 5 ton SUVs so I can enjoy a juicy bonus? I read that you lose 40k per EV, so please go ahead and refrain from selling those. Anyhoo, back to "Becoming" by Michelle Obama.

But you're working for a boss who wears a leather jacket like a cool motorcycle chick!

"tying our bonuses to something most of the public doesn't want"

Get ready to be attacked for telling the truth. "Legacies"
I agree with all of your points. The temporary dopamine rush of people quitting sans severance will cost GM more than what they think they are saving.
You can't design/build a product with a demoralized staff. There's no creativity in a toxic environment, let alone engagement in a noisy zoo. Sometimes I get up from my seat and everyone is just staring at their screens like zombies. Maybe if I was an out of touch phony in a leather jacket I would understand how an environment with fearful people would lead to productivity or how a jazz soundtrack would make up for a wet, dirty restroom with no TP or paper towels. It would be almost laughable if it wasn't sc--wing with people's lives.

seems like it was around the 1st of 2024 that the threats started to come from management for actual compliance to RTO and the toxicity escalated on so many levels after that. i never dreamed it would become that way it is now. 1st forcing us back in (or else) then wave after wave of firings then revoking 'remote' status even if there was no reasonable way to comply. add to that them ignoring their own policy on what constitutes a remote employee, stuffing us into the distraction-filled environment that is the open office layout, tying our bonuses to something most of the public doesn't want, EV and the list continues from there.

The people that know reality while gaslighting others will deserve everything coming to them in the near future. I hope you enjoy it because it's going to be truly awesome.

Red Lobster? Google Thai Union.

Every company you named was famous for mismanagement.

Dollar General faces the same issues. Mismanagement?
How about Red Lobster, McDonald's, Rite Aid, Big Lots, Denny's, Walgreens, and others closing stores across America?
Lowest mortgage applications since 1995?
Malls closing.
Strip mall stores disappearing.
Bank branches gone.
Shipping companies going bankrupt.
Mismanagement? Party on?

Dollar Tree was mismanaged, offered the wrong mix of products (also mismanagement) , and facing competition.

The sad truth is that most corporations cut out the middle man in that scenario.
Gen Z and a large percentage of Gen Y didn't work a serious job through the GFC.
They are going to experience outsource replacement in massive numbers.
It's going to be a humbling experience for so many people who were told that a college degree meant they they inherit the earth; that service jobs were meant for another class of people. Yet, enter any Starbucks and do a poll with the workers. Most of them have degrees. The problem is that as retail stores disappear, there will be no "plan B" when the unemployment runs out. It's going to get much uglier than 2007-2012 and no career path is immune.

The answers to the GFC were "learn to code" or a nursing degree. Some went into teaching. We have seen hundreds of thousands of these jobs cut in the last few years. What's the new career path? Military service? Because you can't move back to mom's basement if mom is being foreclosed on. She's in the same boat because the restaurant closed and there's no where to waitress. The factories are gone. "New visitors" are arriving by the millions during all this while new wars are being set up. Record debt, record defaults, a commercial real estate collapse, record government spending (lowering the dollar's purchasing power)... so many issues that will blow up in all of our faces. There's a reason RVs are being sold at a 50% discount.
Many professionals think these things will not affect them while "the other half" are already too broke for the Dollar Tree. Don't believe me... look it up.

This is a satirical take on personal outsourcing. On a serious note, it is a possible response to RTO requests.

Can Arden and the rest of the SLT still be fully remote, or they need to follow the rules too?

Lots of misinformation on here, exaggerating and obviously folks didn’t even read the story.

Bottom line is there are a small hand full of folks that can no longer be fully remote and need to show up by the same rules like everyone else. This is nothing new and the Tech companies went through the same phase with their staff. GM seems to follow what the tech companies do. Don’t be so damn dramatic

Critcal talent can not be declared.
It can only be bestowed on SLT, friends and family.
Now order the Pod and report to the office!

I guess I'm back to searching for remote jobs.

Well most industries are going back to the office. The stores will be empty during the weekday and the drop off and pick up lanes will be less congested at the schools soon. It will be just like pre-Covid.

Good! Get your butts back into the office for at least 10 hours a day, five days a week! Work really hard to make vehicles which I will totally ignore and tell everyone I know not to buy.

The people who complain about coming in for three days or even working core hours are going to be relieved to know that their pain and suffering will be short lived.
We have fully-saleable cars coming out of nowhere from places like South Korea and China. No Warren Tech Center engineering or U.S. assembly plants involved. The production is only scaling up. So good news!

Beyond that, the software will be created in California and offsite global locations.
AI is being trained right now to create 3D parts, check & create drawings, write marketing material, balance spreadsheets and customer care.

The papered-over recession that started in 2024 will be like no other in history. Even the retail outlets that displaced workers could rely on for "plan B" work are disappearing just as the government destroys the value of the U.S. dollar and starts new wars. I wonder how that will end. The IRS hired tens of thousands of new agents to track gig workers down like animals too as the Fed moves to create a digital currency. No more cash payments. You can't even work "the world's oldest profession" without accepting trackable digital money in the future. Don't worry though, the government is here to help.

Corporate DEI policies are one of the most relevant and fluid changes happening in companies across America today. Yet this layoff forum highly censors and removes open dialogue that pertains to it. You can express any opinion you like here, as long as the host agrees with that opinion. Otherwise you will be silenced.

The people who were working in Florida remote will now have to report to work at an innovation center. If they have been ignoring GM’s past requests that they had to relocate and didn’t do it, they are going to get noticed now for cuts at the end of the year.

5 days a week in office will soon be here. If people were complaining how bad 3 days RTO is, wait until 5 days RTO happens

July 2006 - January 2012: Known as the GFC, AKA the Great Financial Collapse
Over five years of layoffs, no bonus, pay cuts, misery and lots of fear. But it's different this time because the government fakes emoloyment and inflation data as they go into debt by trillions of dollars.
I am quite sure GM won't go back to five days and people won't rat on each other. Ha ha ha ha yes.

My boss didn't like that I would sit in the cafeteria to get work done. If I was at my desk, I would get disturbed by people on conference calls and others having personal conversations nearby. He didn't care.

We will all be working in office, five days a week by end of calendar year 2024.
People will report you for being away from your desk.
People will watch your hours. They will check their watches when you come in and they will whisper to the manager if you haven't been putting in your eight. They will notice your lunch break periods. Your manager will pace the isles to take attendance.
You will be told that your internet usage is being monitored.
This will all absolutely happen. The people who don't follow the rules will quietly disappear. The managers know that there are no other opportunities. If you aren't laid off by the next team GM payout, you will notice that your bonus is 30-40% smaller...and it's probably the last bonus you will see for years. You will not get cost of living adjustments. You will get the smallest margin of rate increases. You will be told, "you are lucky to have a job" if you complain. Some people will even be asked to work in remote GM facilities in other states and other countries.
Many will be displaced. There will be a hiring freeze and that means even the contract and supplier jobs will disappear. You will run into former coworkers working at retail jobs. You will remember the days ahead for the rest of your lives.
