Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

Anyone over 50 hitting a wall with job hunting?

I've been job hunting for months, knowing my time here is probably winding down, but I haven’t even landed an interview yet. I’ve got tons of experience, but it feels like no one’s interested. Am I missing something here, or is it really this tough for someone my age to even get a shot at a new job?

Time to significantly curtail H1Bs. We're full in Morrisville and Cary. Deport these folks and MAGA /s.

I just turned 50, but will fight it all the way. I’ve started botox, lip fillers, plastic surgery, hair transplants and have changed my name to “Caleb”. I now shop at American Eagle and ride my scooter everywhere. I’ve been getting offers galore.

I hit 52 and management started talking about a PIP. I still drive my 22 year old truck and always lived frugally because I knew this might happen. I'm happily unemployed forever.

As a minority in mid-management, my experience is very different . Over the past 2 years I’ve applied for over 10 internal roles that perfectly aligned with my skills and experience. Out of those, I got an initial interview for 2 but didn’t move forward to next round despite being told I was a strong candidate, the roles ultimately went to candidates with personal connections/ relationships with the manager (both male). It’s incredibly frustrating to see such a gap between the perception and the reality. Most of the internal openings are formality with candidate already lined up

I know barely 30 year olds who have worked here and can’t find work for months

I am young, black, with solid professional experience. I have gotten interviews but never a role. People tell me I interview well in feedback, which makes the situation even more frustrating. Many people operate with the assumption that there’s some advantage for people like me (youth, diverse background) cooked into the system and this ironically turns into a self fulfilling machine for the opposite. I also get the feeling that many roles are going to people being laid off from other roles, which puts at a disadvantage younger upward mobile people.

Good luck on your journey.

I’ve interviewed for a couple jobs internally.

It’s been between me and a younger person as the final two.

I’ve lost out. Once hiring manager told me it was because they wanted more diversity on the team. I’m white. And over 50. That’s diversity at Fidelity these days.

Circled back with people in the groups six months later to learn the person they chose is a disaster. In both cases.

That’s nice. The disaster is now a pay grade ahead of me.

Very frustrating.

I know someone laid off from Fidelity since March still out of work. He's over 50 - it's sad.

Honestly the internal promotions have gone to really unqualified people. It’s so disheartening, I’ve really dropped in performance to try to get noticed.

Think critically and don’t fall into the grievance trap. Right now there is a glut of people from tech companies looking for jobs. They have experience that is desirable. Even they are taking months to find a job. The only things in your control are up-skilling and casting a wider net. Good luck out there.

It’s tech age discrimination, it’s been going on for decades under both political parties.

White, males over 45 need not apply. The woke culture doesn’t value your experience. It is becoming the demise of society.
