we know in general drives volumes are declining and will continue to decline with TB/per drive increases, so how is much but a flat business over time

one can calculate how many drives STX ships (investor call shows how many EB, Revenue and drive capacity): still going down

million drives
Q2 21: 30
Q2 23 : 15.3
Q1 24: 11.9
Q2 24: 11.6 (yesterday quarter results)

question is will there be any profit margin on these to even cover the VP cost burden?

Yea stock is up as is most of the tech stocks.

HAMR
Can we make it at volume?
Can we make a profit on each drive?
Does anyone actually want to buy it?

I believe this news could not help the financial report this week. Good news and bad news, which one do you want to hear first?
I recall the same pattern for the last quarter.

price / margin advantage until WD releases a HAMR drive and prices fall, but meaningful near line revenue, doubtful

Absolutely zero numbers on sales of HAMR drives during any of Heavy D’s talks. The ramp to any meaningful sales is a long ways out discounting any typical excursions along the way. Financial results will be interesting.

Hope we ramp up our warranty returns and QA depts before we ship in volume. Read-only drives aren't that useful except for archive.
