Thread regarding Micron Technology Inc. layoffs

Intel employee thinking of joining Micron in Boise

Should I make the move? Is Micron more stable than Intel? To put things in perspective, Intel is performing lay offs every ~4 months. I've been w/Intel for almost three decades.

Stay at Intel and take the severance if you get cut. Micron will be no better, layoffs come and go and when they come, the old guys are the ones that go.

If you were at Intel for 30 years you are most likely 50+ years old. Not a good situation for an individual contributor at Micron. What the prior commuter said, during the last big layoff there were groups where everyone let go was 40+.

You also should be aware that Micron is self insured for medical in Idaho. This means that they pay for the cost of your medical treatments. In general the older crowd has higher medical expenses. It benefits Micron to maintain a young workforce.

Every person let go from my group several years ago was 40+ years of age. If Micron hires you, be ready to be let go in the next layoff.

Micron is a great company to work for if you have the skills! Intel was lousy and does not take advantage of talent. If you get a job go for it. Stock also doing well.

Sure, go work at micron to work more hours for 2/3 the pay. I know for a fact micron pays 70% of what Intel does for the same position. Boise cost of living isn't cheap anymore either. Also terrible toxic work invironment due to bell curve ratings and Sanjay's terrible leadership. You'll spend more time doing pointless TPM projects than actual productive work. A great way to get divorced too. Gooooo Micron!

if you can remain remote and avoid moving to Boise perhaps, but you’re three decades into your career. Unless you possess a unique set of skills, with few exceptions you are likely to be vulnerable whether you stick or leave Good luck!

Yes. It is certainly a good choice as you have worked 30 years. Intel will target old employee and Micron too, but Micron is at a good situation with HBM, DDR, NAND comparing to Intel.
In addition, Boise is a low cost area comparing any other Intel site

Usually you find the 30+ years Micron employee first to go in a layoff. Micron saves money with the NCG (new college grad) instead.

Sounds like you haven't tried applying. Micron has a hiring freeze now. Also, intersting since they are building a fab or maybe just a hollow shell again. Hmmm once again a hiring freezed is generally followed by layoffs.

Another Micron example is when the Lehi Fab was first being built. It was moth balled for several years. Bye bye to those employees that were hired for the new fab.

Boise, Idaho is arguably one of the greatest cities I have ever been too.

I just read that Micron is doing a huge 200B expansion. Not sure if its all in Boise or not. at least another fab there. But...takes time to build it out. So hiring may not occur for another year or two
