Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

Your relationship with the manager?

I doubt there are many more people who have such a bad relationship with a manager like I do. I don't think his attitude towards me is normal at all. Lately he even started yelling at me. The only thing worse is that colleagues who are afraid for their position are starting to behave very similarly towards me, because they know very well that he only likes "mini mes" and those who are very similar to him. I'm looking for a new job to get out of here asap!

The TN culture is very toxic. The RM ran around making side deals with local publishers. Bragging about building a house.Rehiring Mgrs that quit. Unreal.

THAT’S Barnes culture right there !
Fire a bunch of dedicated Booksellers & keep the management actually doing something wrong.

I worked in TN. Transferred out. Horrible culture. RM was not addressing problems. Merch mgr sleeping with part timers. A real mess.

Me too. I transferred before Covid & the furloughs. I keep in touch with some. Things got much worse there. Should’ve fired them all long ago and started fresh. They kept the worst & They fired the wrong ones.

I like how people on here are so far down the totem pole of life that they'll kvetch about store managers as if they aren't also peons in a dead end retail job. It's not as if you need a junior college edjimication to become a manager at BN, and if you're a bookseller, you're downstream from THAT.

Managers where I work always feel threatened by High performers, don’t know why most people who work hard are sincere and are not trying to take anyone’s place I can’t imagine what the management culture is really like behind the scene to foster such hostility. It must be cut throat to be a manager at Barnes and Noble.

I've never seen more disgusting, visious, stupid and lazy people hired as B&N managers. And what really makes me laugh is they always keep the worst ones!

Actually it’s every store, everywhere.

Our Merch mgr was sleeping with a part timer while his wife was pregnant. He thought no one knew. She however bragged about it, having no self esteem. Mgrs screwing underlings is nothing new at BN.

Well someone in our music department has a great relationship with our assistant store manager. They are currently f.....g. It’s no wonder he rarely shows up to work and never gets in trouble for it.

My manager has worked for the company for a LONG
Time, a fact that he reminds us of that every, single day. Apparently that is a valid excuse to play alpha male, chest bump, flirt and ignore constructive feedback from the entire team. My job has little to do with selling books and lots to do with pleasing egos. Every shift starts with HIS Accomplishments and
Ends with sell more of everything if you want to
Keep your Job. Apparently our store has been successful in the past under multiple managers so this guy feels like he is untouchable- king of the hill. We all know he has been demoted in the past and had questionable encounters with booksellers especially the females. He constantly trashes
Corporate, the cluster and area managers b/c he always knows best 🤣 Working for
B&N has always been my dream job but now that I am here it feels more like a Nightmare! Hope y’all have it better than we do in Georgia!

Yelling at you is unacceptable. But that’s what the culture has deteriorated into. You deserve better than to be treated like an animal by someone who’s soon to be on the same unemployment line as you.

Unless you want to be a zombie slave who loves to get used and abused, GTFO!
Have you learned nothing from the 2000 people who were fired for no good reason but to make the corporate execs richer?
